There’s something special about an ASUM conference 💕

Bringing sonographers together, sharing knowledge, learning from passionate people in our profession and catching up with colleagues from across the country. It’s one of the things I’ve always loved about these events.

This November, ASUM is heading to Perth, with multiple specialities, hands-on workshops and dedicated endometriosis sessions on the program.

With Stephen Bird, Ali Deslandes and Lisa Hackett among the key speakers, there’s plenty to look forward to for anyone passionate about ultrasound.

And Perth in November? Pretty hard to beat! ☀️

🌟Being a good sonographer doesn’t automatically make you a good locum.

And nobody really talks about this.

You can be an excellent sonographer, have years of experience and be brilliant at your job. But working as a locum involves a whole other set of skills that you might never have needed as an employee.

Flexibility, adaptability and confidence.

Finding your own work. Building relationships with practices. Negotiating rates. Understanding contracts. Managing your finances, travel and accommodation. Planning ahead so you’re not scrambling to find your next contract when the current one ends.

Knowing not to plan too far ahead.

Suddenly, you’re not just a sonographer. You’re running a business.

And let’s be honest, not everyone wants to do that. Not everyone has the confidence, the knowledge or even the desire to manage all those moving parts themselves.

That’s okay.

But I think it’s important to understand what you’re signing up for before jumping into locum work.

There’s a difference between being a sonographer who travels for work and being an independent locum who takes responsibility for the business side of their career.

Neither path makes you a better sonographer.

But understanding the difference can make a huge difference to your working life, your income and your independence.

I’ve spent years working as a locum, and one thing I’ve learnt is that clinical skills are only part of the equation.

The good news? You don’t have to figure out the business side on your own.

Through my online consultations with Sonographers Downunder, I can help you navigate the practicalities of locum work, build your confidence, understand your options and work towards becoming a more independent locum.

Whether you’re thinking about taking the leap or you’ve been locuming for years and want to do things differently, sometimes a conversation with someone who’s been there can make all the difference.

So, if you’ve been thinking about becoming a locum, don’t just ask yourself whether you’re a good enough sonographer. Ask yourself whether you’re ready for the business side, too.

Sonographers are a special breed of human 😆

We can look at a screen full of grey blobs and somehow know exactly what we’re looking at.

We can hold our bladder for 6 hours, but the second we get a patient on the bed who needs to go urgently… suddenly WE need to go too.

We’ve mastered the art of holding a conversation, scanning with one hand, adjusting the machine with the other, and somehow still remembering protocol.

All whilst giving the best possible care.

We can spot a tiny abnormality on a screen that nobody else can see, but walk straight past a colleague in the supermarket because they’re not wearing their work uniform.

We can multitask better than anyone, but once we’ve clocked out for the day, we are physically and emotionally drained.

And no matter how many years we’ve been doing this, there will always be that ONE patient who asks:

“So, does it all look normal?” 👀

We love our profession with so much pride and passion, we are our own best advocates.

We are our patient’s best advocates.

🌟I love sonography.

But loving a profession doesn’t mean pretending it doesn’t have problems.

We can be proud of what we do and still talk about burnout, physical injuries, unrealistic workloads and the things that need to change.

We can celebrate sonographers while acknowledging that some are struggling.

We can encourage the next generation into our profession while being honest about the realities of working in it.

These things aren’t mutually exclusive.

In fact, I think being able to have these conversations openly is part of what makes a profession stronger.

So this Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month, I’m celebrating sonography in all its complexity. The good, the challenging, the rewarding and the things we still need to work on.

Because wanting better for our profession doesn’t mean we love it any less.

It means we care enough to want it to be better 💙

I haven’t gone anywhere. I’m still a sonographer.

My life just looks a little different these days.

We’ve hit the road again, and this time we’re living in our expedition truck full time.

I’ll still be doing the occasional locum, spending plenty of time on the farm, and travelling around Australia. But I’m also making more room for the things I love outside of ultrasound — including writing, exploring and simply having the freedom to follow where the road takes us.

And because I’ll still be working as a sonographer, there’s a good chance I’ll be popping up in rural ultrasound clinics around the country too.

So if you spot a slightly ridiculous expedition truck pulling up outside your clinic… come and say hello. 😂

I’ll be sharing more of this side of life over on Substack too — the work, the travel, the truck and what it’s like building a life that looks a little different from the usual path.

After a month parked up on a generous stranger’s property while we worked on the truck, we’ve finally set off down south. 🚛✌️

Now for a week of working on the off-grid power system, a short intermission for a couple of weeks, and then onto the next stage.

Building your own expedition truck is a continual work in progress. You might set yourself a goal of 1–2 years… then it blows out, and so does the budget. 😂

Sometimes, the only way to maintain your sanity is to hit the road — even when you’re not 100% ready.

Obviously, there’s a difference between not finished and not safe. You need to make sure the important stuff is sorted and you’re mechanically and structurally sound.

But the little finishing touches? They can be done on the road.

Because if you wait until everything is perfect, you might never actually leave.

Sometimes you just have to start 🧡

Social media sometimes gets a bad rap.

But one thing I think it has done incredibly well is bring our profession together.

Not just across Australia, but around the world.

I’ve loved seeing how differently sonography looks in different countries, different healthcare systems and different departments.

And even here in Australia, working as a locum has shown me just how much variation there can be. From site to site within the same company, state to state, city to rural.

There’s so much we can learn from each other.

Not just about scanning.

About workflows.
About patient care.
About equipment.
About education.
About what works really well… and what perhaps doesn’t.

For a profession that can sometimes feel like we’re all working away in our own little rooms, social media has given us something pretty valuable:

A way to see beyond our own department.

A way to share ideas.

A way to ask questions.

And, perhaps most importantly, a voice.

Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month is a good reminder that our profession is bigger than the room we work in.

There are sonographers all over the world doing this job in completely different ways — and there’s a lot we can learn from each other.

I’m pretty grateful social media has helped connect us.

🌟Want to study sonography but not sure if it’s for you?

There’s no single “type” of person who makes a good sonographer.

But there are a few qualities that will definitely help…

🔹 Curious — you genuinely want to understand what you’re seeing, not just find the answer.

🔹 Patient — because sometimes the anatomy is hiding, the patient is uncomfortable, and the image just isn’t cooperating.

🔹 Observant — you notice the tiny details that can make a big difference.

🔹 A problem solver — when the standard view doesn’t work, you need to think, adapt and try something else.

🔹 A good communicator — you’ll work with patients from all walks of life, often when they’re nervous, uncomfortable or worried.

🔹 Empathetic — because behind every scan is a person, not just a body part.

🔹 Comfortable with being wrong — ultrasound involves a LOT of learning, questioning and asking for help. You never stop learning.

🔹 Technically minded — you need to understand anatomy, pathology, physics, equipment and how they all fit together.

🔹 A little bit stubborn 😂 — because sometimes you simply refuse to accept that you can’t get the image.

🔹 Adaptable — every patient, body and scan can be completely different.

And perhaps most importantly…

❤️ You need to care about people.

You don’t have to be naturally confident.
You don’t have to know everything.
You don’t have to be brilliant at anatomy on day one.

A lot of what makes a great sonographer is developed along the way.

So if you’ve been thinking about studying sonography but wondering whether you’re “the right kind of person”…
