A little reminder for the sonographer who needs it today
 💙

You know more than you did a year ago.

You’ve handled scans that once made you nervous.

You’ve learned from your mistakes.

You’ve helped patients through some of their hardest days.

You’ve probably taught someone else something without even realising it.

Somehow, you became the experienced sonographer that your younger self would have looked up to.

Don’t forget to give yourself some credit.

You’re probably doing a much better job than you think. đŸ«¶

Keep going. You’ve got this. ✹

It’s been a massive day, packing up and hitting the road again.

We are exhausted, but also excited and grateful.

We have just arrived in the Lockyer Valley this afternoon, and it’s so lovely to escape the light pollution and see the Milky Way again!

Back to what we know and love.

And once settled, I’ll dive back into some locum work.

But for now, we’re going to get a few finishing things done on the truck in preparation to head south at the end of the month.

And take a much needed break from scanning.

For now, we have a gorgeous parking spot and can feel the breeze again.

We treated ourselves to dinner at a cool little diner 😍

Catch you guys soon.

The retirement I refused to wait for

My dad was only 51 years old when I lost him. It’s been 20 years now.

He never got to see the retirement he had worked so hard for, and I think about that a lot.

Tomorrow, we are hitting the road again, this time in our new custom-built expedition truck that we built ourselves. Well
 mostly my partner. 😂

Dad would have absolutely loved this truck. He would have loved the fact that we’ve taken a chance on ourselves and decided to chase our dreams rather than waiting for some point in the future when we were “supposed” to start living.

I wrote a little more about why that matters to me in my latest Substack article.

This is for you, dad 💙

✹In a world of AI, I try my best to learn it and embrace it, but still remember who I am.

To me, my voice is important and I don’t want to lose that part of myself. It’s what makes us human.

Unfortunately in a world of short attention spans and algorithms, sometimes authenticity gets lost.

In my new project, I am able to be myself. No AI. My writing comes from my heart.

If you’re interested in a little escape, the details are in the comments 💙

✹ My priorities have changed with every decade of my life.

In my 20s, I was so focused on building a successful career. I had the energy and enthusiasm I needed to make it happen. I learned new skills quickly and with ease.

In my 30s, that energy was more concentrated on refining the things I wanted to improve and trying to make my life slot around my career. More travel. Doing contracts I wanted to do instead of chasing the money.

In my 40s, my priorities have pivoted again.

My life is my priority.

Being physically and mentally healthy. And, most importantly, being happy.

Now I’m working on building a career that suits my lifestyle on the road and what I want to achieve personally, rather than professionally.

I’ve always enjoyed writing, and I’m trying something new. You can find the details in the comments.

We hit the road again in just 3 days! 🚛💙

I can’t wait to take you along with me on my pursuit of happiness.

I’m still a sonographer.

I just don’t want it to be my whole life anymore.

For a long time, my career was my identity. It was what I talked about, what I was known for, and a huge part of how I measured myself.

And honestly? I’m proud of what I’ve built.

But I’ve realised I want there to be more to my life than my job.

More travel. More freedom. More time outside. More writing. More experiences. More me.

I’m not walking away from sonography.

I’m just putting it back in its place.

We are back on the road in less than a week đŸ’Ș🙌

She might not be totally finished, but we don’t care, adventure awaits and we can finish things on the road 😆

Sometimes you just gotta go for it! đŸ’«

Did I experience burnout as a sonographer?

Yes.

If I had my time again would I choose sonography?

Yes. A million times over.

I love my job and encourage others to become a Sonographer. I can only speak from my experience as a Sonographer in Australia.

Yes, I have worked in the NHS in the UK, but it was only 2 years and I was there as a locum earning good money compared to staff.

There are major systemic issues worldwide and Australia is no exception, but we are working on improving the workplace culture. It’s a slow process that requires patience and endurance.

We are fortunate to be paid very well in Australia and receive much more respect than some Sonographers do in other countries.

I tell my story in order to help others not make the same mistakes I did.

What mistakes did I make?

- never saying ‘no’
- not respecting my time and personal boundaries
- taking work for the money despite being exhausted
- being a people pleaser
- being a perfectionist
- putting myself last

We are the ones in high demand and short supply, so stand up for yourself if you feel you’re being taken advantage of 💙

It’s hard not to make these mistakes when you love your job and want to help people.

But look at it like this: if you want to stay in your career a long time and help more people, you need to always put yourself first and care for yourself.

Happy Scanning,

Kelly x

The gap nobody talks about after graduation

One thing that comes up again and again in my consultations with newly graduated sonographers is:

“I want to upskill
but I can’t find anyone to train me.”

And I think we need to talk about this.

Because graduating doesn’t mean you’ve suddenly mastered every examination.

You can be qualified, motivated and genuinely keen to learn — but still need more hands-on experience, supervision and guidance before you feel confident scanning independently.

You want to stay where you trained, but somehow the training stopped and you feel unsupported. You’re considering leaving that workplace to chase more training.

And this is where things can get frustrating.

Employers often want experience.

But how do you get that experience when you can’t find someone willing or able to train you?

It can leave new graduates feeling like they’re somehow behind, when in reality, they’re exactly where they should be: continuing to learn.

So I’m curious

If you’re a newly graduated sonographer, what has been your biggest barrier to upskilling?

And if you’re an experienced sonographer, what advice would you give someone trying to develop their skills after graduation?

Let’s start the conversation. 👇
