Phonological processes are patterns of sound errors that typically developing children use to simplify speech as they are learning to talk. A phonological disorder occurs when phonological processes persist beyond the expected age of acquisition and when the processes used are atypical.

is a typical phonological pattern seen when children use /w/ or /y/ sounds in substitution for /r/ and /l/.
“Wed -> Red” or “yid / wid -> lid”

This process should be eliminated by the age of 6.
