Across the cataloguer’s desk this week... 🔍

In 1918, the Eiffel Tower wasn’t just the world’s tallest structure - it was also an important wartime communications tower. 🇫🇷

Among this collection of handwritten Royal Naval signals is an extraordinary message marked “From Eiffel Tower”, received at 5:45am on 11 November 1918.

It relays Marshal Foch’s order that hostilities would cease across the front at 11am that morning.

The album continues into the aftermath, including further signals concerning the Armistice and lists of German warships surrendered later that month.

A fascinating record of the end of the First World War, captured as the news was being transmitted.

And more than a century later, here it is on our desk. 📜

That's a wrap! 🏆

After months of researching, cataloguing, photographing, filming and sharing these remarkable pieces, Auction No. 159 has officially come to a close.

What began with a trip to Tasmania back in March ended with one of the biggest auctions we've ever held, with thousands of collectors joining us as some truly amazing items found their new home.
