Who do you run your business ideas through?

Who do you check in with when something feels unclear, exciting, or a bit risky?

Who holds you accountable not in a formal “boardroom” way, but in the honest, grounded way that actually matters?

Back in 2020, I joined a program called Key Person of Influence. One of the simplest but most powerful things they did was buddy us up with someone in business who wasn’t a competitor, but was walking a similar path.

I was paired with Chris Smoje. Fast forward six years, and we’re still catching up. Not because we have to, but because we choose to.

We talk business ideas, challenges, and opportunities. We also talk about the harder stuff, the fears, the doubts, the things you don’t always say out loud in leadership.
Over time, it’s become more than business. We know each other’s families. We celebrate wins, we call things out when needed, and whenever we’re in each other’s states, Perth and Brisbane, we make time to catch up in person.

In fact, he even got to meet one of my team today, Victoria, which says a lot about how far this connection has grown beyond just business.

What started as accountability has become friendship. And I think that’s the piece we often underestimate in leadership. You don’t just need strategy, plans, and performance targets.

You need people who will stay in the conversation with you over years, not just when it’s easy or convenient. Chris has become one of those people for me, and I don’t take that lightly.

It’s also a big part of why I now create and run group coaching programs for leaders nationally, building the same kind of space where leaders can think out loud, challenge themselves, and not do it alone.

💡 Leadership Mindset Shift for Busy Leaders

Most leaders don’t burn out from workload. They burn out from the story they tell themselves about the workload.

This morning I didn’t get my usual walk in, but I took the dogs out quickly before heading to the office and found myself reflecting on a conversation with one of my team last week.

We are in a really busy season right now. And I love that.

But when I asked how things were going, the response was honest: “On the outside I’m calm. On the inside it feels like it’s racing.”

And then something powerful:“I’m choosing to see this as exciting. We are doing great work.”

That is the difference...
Same workload.
Same pressure.
Different story.

As leaders, we always have two options:
“This is too much. I can’t keep up.”
OR
“This is a moment that matters. I’m growing through it.”

Your story shapes your state. And your state shapes how you lead, how you show up, and how your team experiences you.

Change the story, and everything shifts.

💬 If this resonates and you are navigating a busy season right now, reach out. Always happy to have a conversation around how you lead through it without burning out.

What the latest insights are reminding us about connection:

The recent Gallup 2026 Global Happiness Report highlights something we’re seeing every day in our work:

The more digital our world becomes, the more intentional we need to be about real human connection.

Here are a few reflections…and what they mean for how we lead, engage and connect.

Ever felt like leadership is a bit like stepping into oncoming traffic?

I had a moment in Vietnam last week where I genuinely didn’t think I could take the next step.

Standing on the edge of a busy street in Ho Chi Minh, watching the constant flow of traffic, every instinct in me said “don’t move.” My mind was racing with worst-case scenarios, and I could feel that familiar surge of fear and uncertainty take over.

But what happened next surprised me.

In the middle of what felt like chaos, I found a rhythm… and it reminded me of something we don’t talk about enough in leadership.

I Almost Didn’t Make It Across the Street in Vietnam — Here’s What It Taught Me About Leadership

We just returned from Vietnam where I had the privilege of keynoting at a conference, catching up with my team for some team building, and enjoying a family holiday with my girls. One evening I faced a moment that perfectly captured the rhythm of life and leadership there.

I found myself in the middle of a crazy busy Vietnamese street at 7 pm in Ho Chi Minh. Traffic never stops and at first it felt terrifying. I remember saying to my girls, "Let’s just not cross, I can’t do this, what if we get hit? What if we die – I know dramatic but that’s how my body responded". My adrenaline was racing, my mind full of what ifs, and I wondered if I or my girls would make it across safely. It was honestly the most frightening thing I have ever done, even more than the Singapore Sling or the Batman Rollercoaster.

Then something remarkable happened. In the chaos there was a rhythm, a flow. Motorbikes and cars moved around me, I moved with the traffic, I did not run, I did not panic. Everything worked. I realised that this culture embraces fluidity. There is no rush, no anger, no aggression, just a silent understanding that we all have the right to be there. Life moves as one and we can too.

It struck me as a powerful leadership metaphor. Sometimes we cannot control everything around us, but we can move with what is happening. Leadership is not always about forcing the way forward. It is about reading the flow, trusting others, and knowing when to step, when to pause, and how to navigate complexity with calm and confidence even when on the inside you feel anything but calm.

Sharing this video as a reminder that great leadership often comes from staying present, moving with the situation, and trusting that everyone has a place in the flow. Sometimes letting go of control is the most powerful way to lead. I need to do this more myself but I also thought it might have a lesson in here for you too.

8 Powerful Questions to Build Deeper Connection

If connection is the goal… questions are the gateway.

For those in my network that work in financial services, or any client-facing role, this will resonate with you. Conversations over coffee, a meal, or even a simple shared moment of reflection open the door to deeper, more meaningful relationships.

But what do you ask when you’re in these moments?

How do you move beyond surface-level conversations and truly connect?

In the work I’m fortunate to be able to lean into with so many like-minded professionals, one area I really love exploring is all around asking the right questions.

Here are 8 powerful financial questions you can use to strengthen relationships:

▪️ What are your biggest financial worries or concerns right now?
▪️ What feelings come up for you when you think about your current financial situation?
▪️ What are your long-term financial goals, and why are they important to you?
▪️ What are your values when it comes to money and financial decision-making?
▪️ Are there any past financial experiences that still affect your emotions or decisions today?
▪️ Do you have any fears or anxieties about retirement or your financial future?
▪️ How do you envision your ideal financial future, and what emotions does that vision evoke?
▪️ What role do you want money to play in your life beyond just meeting basic needs?

Connection doesn’t come from having all the answers… it comes from asking better questions.

I had the absolute privilege of sharing my insights at the Lifespan Financial Planning Conference in Vietnam. From the vibrant streets to the energy of the people, the city was nothing short of inspiring, and it set the perfect backdrop for a few days of learning, connection, and growth.

I got to lead two sessions that I loved. The first focused on mastering objections and understanding client psychology, giving planners practical tools to confidently handle objections and develop strategies for understanding why clients buy and why they object. When we truly understand this, we can connect more deeply and help clients see the full value of what we do.

The second session explored communicating your unique value and building stronger client connections, helping advisers foster long-term engagement, build trust, and ensure clients understand the full scope of the services provided.

What made this experience truly special was the people. Thank you to Nicole Arnold and Lisa Gregory for putting on such an amazing conference. It was wonderful meeting Eugene Ardino, Eugene Sarravalle, Kevin Mayne (great to see you again since our last Vietnam conference), Marcelo Fernandez for your passion and dedication to advisers, and Michael Gershkov and the Your Future of Advice team — loved having you in the sessions and meeting your children. Peter Donovan so great to have had the opportunity to hear your insights and for you to share your thoughts with Sophia.

Being part of a company that genuinely supports its advisers and takes the time to understand their challenges was inspiring. It reminded me why connection, insight, and shared learning are at the heart of great financial advice.

Here are a few snapshots from our time in Vietnam — an experience I’ll never forget!

As we head into the Easter break, I always find myself reflecting on the last 16 years of being a mum at this time of year.

My girls lived for it, the Easter egg hunts, big family breakfasts, friends staying the whole weekend, endless swims in the pool… and yes, chocolate before lunch.

But when I really think about it, it wasn’t the chocolate or the traditions they loved most.

It was those simple, unhurried moments of being together, the kind of genuine connection we don’t always make space for in everyday life.

Connection is built in the moments we share.

After returning from Vietnam and keynoting at the Lifespan Annual Conference, I’m reflecting on the role of shared experiences in building trust…not just with clients, but within our teams.

With new insights from Gallup’s 2026 Global Happiness Report highlighting the impact of social disconnection, this piece explores why real human connection matters more than ever.

✨Integration in Action✨

What a powerful way to bring the Sales & Human Connection Program: Advisers of Influence to life with the Viridian PY Community.

These final sessions weren’t about new content. They were about mastery.

Advisers practiced articulating their ecosystem of value beyond a per-hour rate.
They applied the “objection not rejection” reframe in real-time scenarios.
They refined how they present their value proposition with clarity and conviction.

Because great advice isn’t just technical. It’s human.

And when you truly embed the psychology of influence, emotional awareness, and purposeful communication - your conversations change.

Watching this group move from learning concepts to confidently applying them has been inspiring.

This is what the next generation of advisers looks like: self-aware, values-driven, and deeply client-centred.

If this sort of impact driven, human connection work resonates with you or your organisation, reach out and let’s chat ✨
