Winning an award is wonderful. But watching our clients win? That's something else entirely.

THREE Safe Spaces clients were finalists at the Australian Women's Small Business Champion Awards and Courageous Girls took home the Masters Award.

Nine months ago, owner Sam was a sole trader. Now she's building a team to reach even more children.

Last week was a pretty special one.

We officially launched Fostering Beginnings, surrounded by so many of the people who have helped bring this program to life.

It started with a simple belief. That we CAN find, prepare and support more foster carers without compromising on quality. And we CAN deliver outcomes faster because we can do things differently.

And already, that belief is becoming very real.

More than 40 households trained. Carers moving through assessment and approval. Children beginning new chapters in safe, supported homes.

This launch wasn't really about celebrating a program. It was about the people behind it, the carers stepping forward and the children at the heart of why we're doing it.

This week at SCS, instead of a whole-team conference, we're running Communities of Practice.

70+ team members across Australia and Aotearoa, connecting in smaller groups relevant to their work. Sharing stories, talking through the tricky stuff and asking how we can do better.

Our team holds an enormous amount of wisdom. We just need to create the space to share it.

First up: the Fostering Beginnings Community of Practice, learning directly from experienced carers.

There's not one big thing that makes a carer a special person.

It's a thousand little things.

Remembering how their child likes their toast. Not pushing them to chat when they want to be silent after a big day. Driving them to appointments, school, sport, fun things, not-fun things, and back again.

Understanding the small wins that mean nothing to an outsider but make an extraordinary difference to them. Staying calm when things go pear-shaped. Knowing the 'why' behind a behaviour and managing it accordingly.

It's showing up. Again and again and again.

Carers aren't superheroes. Oftentimes they're the most humble humans you'll ever meet. They have jobs, families, worries, tired days and full lives of their own. Yet they make room for another person, for another set of needs.

This National Carers Week, we see you. What you do matters. Thank you.

What if teaching our children to be 'good' is actually making it harder for them to say no?

We teach kids to listen, to be polite, to respect adults. But when does respect become obedience? And does that obedience put them at risk?

I've been thinking about this a lot since the ISPCAN conference. I've written about it here.

Let them say no in the small moments, so they're ready to say no in the big ones.

What a night!

Last week we had the privilege of celebrating 40 years of Queensland Child Protection Week alongside so many people who care deeply about children, families and creating safer communities.

Four decades is a pretty incredible milestone. Hearing Kay McGrath speak about the origins of this movement was genuinely inspiring. From small things, big things grow.

We caught up with familiar faces, met new ones, shared stories and celebrated the people who have given so much to this work over the years. It's a tight-knit sector, and there's a real sense of kinship between us all.

All 1,000 of us in that room know there's still plenty of work to do. But being surrounded by people who genuinely care about making a difference? That gives you a lot of hope for what comes next.

Happy 40 years, Queensland Child Protection Week. We were so proud to be there.
