URGENT HUMANITARIAN APPEAL – SUPPORT SENIOR POYUBA KAMANDA
"Together, We Can Restore Hope and Dignity."

United Nationals Countryless Children (UNCC) is making an urgent appeal to compassionate individuals, organisations and communities around the world to help Mrs Poyuba Kamanda, an elderly refugee living in Rhino Refugee Settlement, Terego District, Uganda.

A heartfelt testimony from her son, Mr Doga, reflects the daily hardship their family is facing. He expressed his sincere gratitude to UNCC for standing with elderly people like his mother, explaining that he is unwell himself and has no financial means to provide the care and medical support she urgently needs.

Mrs Poyuba Kamanda is currently cared for by Miss Oba, who provides daily assistance with personal hygiene, comfort and basic care. Despite this dedicated support, Mrs Kamanda's health has continued to decline. She is experiencing frequent vomiting, episodes of collapse, serious ear problems, vision impairment and other medical conditions that require urgent assessment and treatment.

This testimony was recorded with the informed consent of the family by UNCC Volunteer Mr Robert W. during a welfare visit in Rhino Refugee Settlement. By sharing this story, the family hopes to raise awareness of the challenges faced by many elderly refugees who have no reliable income, limited access to healthcare and few family resources to meet their daily needs.

Emergency Response

Today, the United Nationals Countryless Children (UNCC) Emergency Volunteer Team responded to an urgent medical call involving an elderly refugee requiring immediate medical attention in Rhino Refugee Settlement.

Due to the absence of a dedicated ambulance within the settlement, UNCC volunteers mobilised immediately using a motorcycle (boda boda) to safely transport the elderly patient to Yinga Health Centre III for emergency assessment and treatment. The rapid response demonstrated the dedication and commitment of UNCC volunteers, who remain on call day and night to assist seniors and other vulnerable individuals in need.

Interventions Provided

Upon receiving the emergency call, the UNCC team:

Responded immediately to the patient's location.
Assisted the elderly patient with safe lifting and mobility.
Provided physical support during transfer onto the motorcycle.
Escorted the patient safely to Yinga Health Centre III.
Assisted health workers during admission and registration.
Monitored the patient's condition throughout transport.
Provided emotional support and reassurance to the patient.
Liaised with healthcare staff to ensure continuity of care.
Continued follow-up with the patient after arrival at the health facility.
Challenges Identified

This incident highlights the urgent need for improved emergency transport services within Rhino Refugee Settlement. Many elderly refugees have limited mobility and rely on community volunteers to access healthcare. Without a functioning ambulance, vulnerable patients are often transported on motorcycles, which may not be suitable for frail older persons or those with serious medical conditions.

UNCC Appeal

UNCC urgently appeals to humanitarian partners, donors, government agencies and well-wishers around the world to support the establishment and operation of emergency medical transport services for seniors and vulnerable refugees.

UNCC has completed the procurement of a humanitarian ambulance, which is intended to serve seniors and vulnerable communities across Rhino Refugee Settlement and surrounding areas. Additional support is now required to equip, register and operate the ambulance, including recruitment of trained paramedics and nurses, medical equipment, fuel and ongoing operational costs.
