The Champion Session meads was once again taken out by .co this time with the Strawberry and Pomegranete. The other meads they entered all picked up silver. They often have a mead on tap instead of ciders or seltzers like you see at most breweries they went with a local produce of honey starting with the honey from as local as they could get on premise from . Also throwing out the general idea of mead it will often be one of the lower ABV drinks you will find on tap. Perfect for QLD summer if you find yourself in newstead be sure to check them out.

Another one of our 2024 entrants Mt Stirlling Mead. . Settled in the heart of QLD's wine country they have a great little tasting room which we visited today and picked up some 2025 entries as well as some for personal consumption and badly taken publicity photos. And with that it is now getting to the pointy end of competition prep time for us with entries closing(if you missed out and desperately need to please reach out via message) countdown to judging is now on within a fortnight 2025 comp will be over.

Next up in posts is Maxwell wines. The best known, longest running and easiest accessed mead in Australian and seeing how they went in the competition, it is not hard to see why they have been around so long. That along with their highly regarded vineyard restraunt and cellar door, they are well worth looking out for.

Next up for celebration of Meaderies from 2024 was champion meadery as decided by highest average of meaderies with 3 or more meads. I will say it was a close contest, but one of the few gold medallists with the Champion Other category with Strawberry Jam was . Pictured is one of their earlier blueberry batchs, and just look at the colour.

Category talk. Show meads. This is a category often referred to as traditional, with the flavour ingredients being honey yeast and water. Often showcase floral sources of honey of either a dominant floral source or a regions time stamp near the hives. Meads are judged on flavour profile where any characters from the fermentation process should complement or enhance the main show, which is the honey.

The struggle in Australia is that most varietal honey descriptions aren't of the Australian landscape and even then dont go into how the flavours might transform under fermentation and increase or decrease in aroma and flavour. This brings us to the experiment the photo above is of. A blind tast of honeys and corresponding meads where we have tried to control the other variables like fermentation conditions, water, yeast, etc, to best of the ability. These will then have flavours of both written down and compiled to start creating a catalogue. While this was planned to start before this years competition , we pushed this part back to next year as we get the system tweaked to how best to implement. This will not be done by just one person but a range of people with varying sensory backgrounds.

If you are wondering how to support this effort entering the competition, if you have meads. Otherwise, reach out after the competition in November as this is when we will continue this stage of giving back to the wider mead community.
