Every Standard Is Being Set By Someone

When leaders fail to set standards, employees create their own.

Every workplace has standards.

The question is whether they're intentional or accidental.

If you run a business in Australia, the second half of 2026 is shaping up to be one of the biggest compliance shifts we've seen in years.

A few of the major changes that should be on your radar:

☕ Payday Super
From 1 July 2026, super is moving much closer to payday rather than the traditional quarterly rhythm many businesses have built their cash flow around. Employers will need systems, payroll processes and cash management that can actually keep up.

☕ Paid Parental Leave expands again
Families with a child born or adopted from 1 July 2026 will be eligible for 26 weeks of government-funded Paid Parental Leave.
Remember when businesses thought 18 weeks sounded like a lot?
We're now talking about six months. Workforce planning matters more than ever.

☕ Junior wage rates are changing
The Fair Work Commission has announced significant changes to junior rates under the Retail, Fast Food and Pharmacy Awards.
Businesses heavily reliant on younger workforces need to start modelling labour costs now to be ready for this change in December

☕ Annual wage review season is here again
Which means every HR person in Australia is currently staring at Fair Work updates with the same expression people reserve for unexplained tax bills.

☕ National Minimum Wage increases to $26.44 per hour as of July 1, 2026

☕ The lowest-paid classifications, including C13 and C14, receive additional structural adjustments

Are you ready for these changes Australia? If not, now is the time to chat to your HR advisor, and accountant. Better to be prepared than fined for getting it wrong.

Fair Work Announces 4.75% Wage Increase: What Business Owners Need to Know

The Fair Work Commission has announced a 4.75% increase to the National Minimum Wage and Modern Award minimum rates, effective from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026.

If you employ staff under a Modern Award, this is not something to leave until the last minute.

What does this mean?

If your employees are paid Award rates, their minimum pay will likely increase from July.

This may also impact:

Penalty rates
Overtime rates
Allowances linked to Award rates
Salary arrangements that were previously close to Award minimums
Labour budgets and forecasting
What should you do now?

$ Identify which staff are covered by a Modern Award

$ Review current pay rates against Award classifications

$ Assess payroll and roster cost impacts

$ Confirm your payroll system will be updated correctly

$ Review any salary staff who may require adjustments to maintain Award compliance

What does this mean for your budget?
A 4.75% increase may not sound significant on paper, but across multiple employees it can have a substantial impact on annual labour costs.

For example:
10 employees earning $70,000 per year = approximately $33,250 additional wages per year, before considering superannuation increases and on-costs.

For businesses operating on tight margins, now is the time to review:

Pricing
Rostering efficiencies
Workforce planning
Business wastage
Labour budgets for FY26/27

The biggest risk?
Many employers assume their payroll provider will automatically handle everything.

The reality is that businesses remain responsible for ensuring employees are paid correctly.

Getting it wrong can result in underpayments, backpay obligations, superannuation issues, and Fair Work exposure.

The businesses that navigate wage increases best are not the ones reacting in July.

They are the ones planning for them now.

Seven years of trading.
Hundreds of happy customers.
A strong reputation in the community.

Then one Fair Work complaint lands on desk at the wrong time, because there's never a right time for these.

Suddenly, it's not just about the complaint.

It's legal costs.
Management time.
Potential penalties.
Staff talking.
Online reviews.
Media attention if things escalate far enough.

The reality is that most businesses aren't brought undone by one catastrophic event.

They get caught by one costly mistake that nobody thought would become a bigger issue.

That's why employment decisions deserve the same level of attention as financial decisions.

The risk isn't just the fine.
Sometimes it's the reputation that takes the bigger hit.

On 29 May 2026, the Fair Work Commission released an update that every employer should be aware of.

Applications to the Commission have increased significantly over the past few years, with more employees representing themselves and many now using AI tools to help prepare claims.

In response, the Commission is evolving how matters are managed.

We're seeing a stronger move toward digital processes, including greater use of online lodgements and document management systems. Businesses involved in enterprise agreements will also need to ensure documents are lodged in formats that can be digitally reviewed, rather than relying solely on scanned copies.

Another key change is speed.

The Commission is trialling earlier engagement in suitable matters, with some parties being contacted within weeks of an application being lodged. That means less time to scramble for documents, gather information or work out your response.

For business owners, the takeaway is simple.

Good record keeping, clear processes and proactive HR practices are becoming more important than ever. Waiting until an issue reaches the Commission is becoming a much riskier strategy.

The businesses that navigate these situations best are usually the ones that have their foundations in place long before a claim is ever lodged.

Have you noticed workplace compliance becoming more complex over the last few years, or is it just me?

Most businesses are carrying hidden HR risk.

They just have not discovered it yet.
Outdated contracts, inconsistent processes, missing policies, poor documentation, wages not reviewed, annualised salaries, and worse, psychosocial hazards unaddressed.

Everything feels fine until someone challenges it.
How would your business cope with 1 of these challenges?

A lot of businesses think HR is paperwork.

Until:
A staff complaint lands.
Someone resigns unexpectedly.
A manager mishandles performance.
A Fair Work issue appears.
Workers Compensation paperwork gets submitted.

Then suddenly HR matters.
By then, it's costly, time consuming, and may not prevent fines and the fall-out.

Proactive HR isn't just about creating forms and saying "no" to anything fun. It's the 1 aspect in your business that can be the answer to your growth problems, and your prevention for things going wrong.

Your managers should not be learning leadership through trial and error.

That creates inconsistency. Confusion. Risk. Turnover.

Good businesses train leaders properly. What does this look like for your business?
