Speech and language are often talked about together… but they’re actually two different parts of communication 💬✨

🗣️ Speech is about how we say words - our sounds, clarity and how easily others understand us.

💭 Language is about what we say and understand - our words, sentences, ideas and ability to communicate.

Some children may need support with speech, language, or both. Every child’s communication journey looks different 🌈

✨ Lately at Playful Paediatrics... 💛
It’s been a big few weeks around here!

🌈 We wrapped up two amazing holiday groups filled with connection, creativity, confidence-building and so much fun.

🤝 We came together for a team day - learning, collaborating and creating even more ways to support the incredible children and families we work with.

🧩 Our therapy rooms have been full of playful ideas, meaningful moments and lots of laughter as we continue finding fun and creative ways to build skills through connection and play.

🌿 We’re growing our team and are currently hiring a Senior Speech Pathologist and an Occupational Therapist! We’re so excited for what’s ahead as we continue building our Playful Paediatrics community.

💚 We love seeing our clinic continue to grow, and we’re so grateful to be part of so many children’s journeys.

A car ride game that’s secretly supporting speech and language development 🚗💬

“I spy with my little eye, something that is…” 👀✨

This classic game encourages children to listen carefully, build vocabulary, think about sounds, describe what they see, and take turns in conversation.

For younger children, start with categories, colours, or simple descriptions:

☁️ “I spy something fluffy…”
🦒 “I spy something tall…”
🔴 “I spy something red…”

Then, as they’re ready, build towards sounds:
“I spy something beginning with…”

It’s one of the most common questions parents ask during their first speech pathology appointment.

When it comes to late talking, it’s about so much more than the number of words a child says. We look at the whole picture - how they understand language, communicate their wants and needs, play, interact with others, and connect with the people around them.

Prep-ready? Let’s talk about what that actually means. 🐝

Recently we had the absolute joy of heading to Busy Bees Coorparoo to chat all things school readiness with the wonderful Jill from Kids Matters OT!

We know “getting ready for prep” can feel like a checklist parents suddenly need to master - letters, numbers, sitting still. But readiness is so much bigger (and more human) than that.

We talked about what really supports a child heading into their first year of school:
🧡 Communication and connection, not just “academics”
🧡 Regulation and co-regulation - because a calm body learns best
🧡 Play as the foundation for everything, not a break from learning
🧡 Following the child’s pace, strengths and interests
🧡 Everyday routines as the best (and easiest!) place to build skills

A neuroaffirming lens means we’re not chasing a one-size-fits-all version of “ready.” Every child gets there differently, and that’s not just okay - it’s expected.

Such a special evening connecting with local families and fellow professionals doing beautiful work in this space. This is what community-centred, holistic care looks like. 🙌

Last week, our wonderful Speech Pathologist, Isuru, facilitated our two-day Connect & Play Holiday Group!✨

Across the two days, children had the opportunity to build friendships, practise social interaction skills such as turn-taking, teamwork and communication, and most importantly, have fun through play. It was so rewarding to see so many smiles, growing confidence, and new connections being made.

Our Building Bonds social group is now running fortnightly throughout Term 3 - starting next week with only a limited number of places still available.
