BAS Agent. Welcome to my page. I'm Kathleen Nelson, and my entry into Bookkeeping began in 1992 with the start of our family business where I was the Office Manager/Bookkeeper etc. In 2009 I was asked to be Bookkeeper for a friend's business and I am still there today! As I really enjoy my work, this prompted me to set up my own Bookkeeping Practice and expand my clientele. Today I help b

usinesses from Sole Trader, Partnerships, Companies and Trusts. I've also completed the Cert IV in Financial Services - Bookkeeping and became a Registered BAS Agent in 2010. I am a Member in Practice of the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) and as such have the support and accreditation of Australia's largest and most respected professional bookkeepers' association. I keep abreast of changes in BAS Laws, Software and Bookkeeping matters by regularly attending ICB Network Meetings, Workshops and Conferences. To round things off, I became a MYOB Professional Partner. I have worked with MYOB software since 1992 and love it - and its continuing upgrades and various software programmes. It is a powerful business tool and can be customised to suit all styles and forms of business. I can offer training and set up MYOB for your business and I can carry out your regular bookkeeping tasks that you may not have the time or inclination to do. Custom Bookkeeping & Admin Services offers customised bookkeeping and administrative support for all types of small to medium sized businesses in a wide range of industries. I enjoy meeting new people and helping businesses with their BAS and Payroll obligations.

Be very alert when your waiting for your tax return. The ATO will never ask you to click on a link

There's a new tax scam doing the rounds online. Here's what it looks like 👇

If you’re being asked by the ATO to click on a 'DocuSign' link to release your tax return – don’t. It's not us.

It’s a scam designed to steal your personal info to:

💰 Commit refund fraud
💰 Access your tax and super details
💰 Sell your identity to organised crime groups

We never use ‘DocuSign’ to finalise tax refunds. If you receive an email like this, here's what you need to do 👇

It is important for business to carefully select who they want to help them stay compliant and on top of their bookwork. A registered BAS Agent must adhere to strict guidelines and hold the relevant training certificates. A BAS Agent is an asset to businesses - both small and large.

We’re running a new advertising campaign to promote the importance of using a registered BAS agent. Unregistered preparers don’t have the required qualifications to advise clients on their obligations, and if they lodge statements to the Australian Taxation Office on behalf of a business, they are doing so illegally. Accurate financial reporting is vital for businesses and this campaign links through to our online register to allow businesses to check their BAS agent is registered with us. ATO FOCUS - Quarterly to Monthly GST Reporting:

If you operate a small business and have a history of failing to comply with your tax obligations the ATO can move you from quarterly to monthly reporting as part of their corrective action.

From March 2025, small businesses that have a history of failing to comply will start to receive communication from the ATO notifying them of their new monthly reporting cycle effective from 1 April 2025. These businesses have not responded to previous communications and demonstrate a poor compliance history, for example:

> paying late or not paying the amount due
> not lodging or lodging late
> reporting your tax obligations incorrectly.
> you will be notified in writing if the ATO move you to monthly GST reporting.

The ATO state that they are obligated to move you to monthly GST reporting under A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999, paragraph 27-15(1)(c), where the Commissioner is satisfied that you have a history of failing to comply with your obligations.

Monthly reporting of BAS may help with small business' cash flow however the due date is set for 21st of each month which puts pressure on businesses to meet deadlines. It also increases your costs of bookkeeping. If you feel that this would suit you better however, it is possible to voluntarily change to monthly. Contact me to discuss if you need.

CRIMINAL UNDERPAYMENT LAWS:
From 1st Jan, 2025, businesses who intentionally underpay wages or entitlements (including Superannuation), or do not pay by the due date, can now be prosecuted under the new criminal underpayment laws. This excludes honest mistakes. Courts can issue penalties of up to 10 years imprisonment and/or fines of either 3 times the amount of the underpayment or up to $1.65million for an individual or $8.25 million for a Company.

To ensure wages are correctly calculated and paid, Fair Work Ombudsman has all the relevant resources including pay calculators and Awards. Small business employers (with less than 15 employees) need to understand and access the protections of the Voluntary Small Business Wage Compliance Code (the Code) to avoid non-compliance. Refer: fairwork.gov.au/vsbwcc

Fair Work Ombudsman has also produced a handy Guide for small business employers: https://www.fairwork.gov.au/sites/default/files/2024-12/fg-guide-to-paying-employees-correctly-and-vsbwcc.pdf

A small business employer can’t be referred for criminal prosecution by us if we’re satisfied that they’ve complied with the Voluntary Small Business Wage Compliance Code (Code).
