Samoa and Tonga are passionate rivals. But when the focus is on trends in these countries rather than rugby or rugby league results there is relatively little media coverage as and are some of the numerous Small Island Developing States (SIDS) which were not reported on in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2025 report.

Fortunately, the World Bank’s Control of Corruption governance indicator provides data that allows an examination of 2012-2024 control of corruption scores. You can discover long-term trends in the control of corruption in these countries in the video:

When it comes to corruption, long-term performance should be rated more highly than short-term performance. The disappointing feature of the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2024 results is the continued decline in average global CPI scores.

Instead of the traditional boisterous street partying on New Year's Eve, tens of thousands of protesters led by university students gathered overnight in Belgrade and other Serbian cities to demand political reforms and justice against a background of government corruption in major infrastructure projects.

The protests have been prompted by a tragedy in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad on 1 November 2024 when a canopy at Novi Sad's central train station collapsed resulting in 15 deaths.

This tragedy has prompted significant and growing widespread protests, led by students.

Recently announced plans to help address corruption in the Fijian police force are highlighted.

Lessons learned from actions implemented to address corruption in police forces across the United States which could benefit not only Fiji but other Pacific Island states are also discussed.

This video discusses the key challenges facing President Ruto following his recent decision to sack most of his cabinet on 10 July 2024.

President Ruto must formulate a new set of policies and reforms to safeguard debt sustainability to meet IMF requirements for the IMF’s proposed additional financial support for Kenya and replace his recent abandoned fiscal initiatives including the Finance Bill 2024.

President Ruto must also make some progress in improving Kenya’s poor long-term performance in addressing corruption and restoring some public trust in Kenya’s national and local government political classes.

The Regional Conference of Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Commonwealth Africa is being held in Accra from May 5-12, 2024. The conference theme is “Strengthening Institutions and Promoting Transparency: A means of fighting Corruption in Commonwealth Africa”.
This video reviews scores published by Transparency International in their Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2023 for the 21 Commonwealth African nations and highlights the corruption trends evident in this data.
Commonwealth African countries continue to face significant challenges in their anti- corruption efforts.

This video reviews the Solomon Islands’ performance in addressing corruption in the periods 2012-2023, 2018-2023 and 2022-2023. The Solomon Islands CPI score increased slightly in 2016-2023. The country’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) score moved in a relatively small range in the latter period. The Solomon Islands CPI score has been slightly less than average Asia/Pacific and global CPI scores during the majority of the 2016-2023 period.

This video reviews Oceania’s performance in addressing corruption in the periods 2012-2023, 2018-2023 and 2022-2023. Oceania’s average CPI score declined by 17.00% in 2012-2023 compared with the 0.42% decline in the average global CPI score. Oceania’s poor result is substantially attributable to the expansion of the Oceania data set which has contributed to the reduced Oceania average CPI score from 2016 onwards.
