Its taper week 1 for our guys looking to do the Crossfit Open 2020. Remember a taper is 9 - 14 days and gives around a 3-8% improvement. Which could be contextually meaningful dependant on where you might sit in the rankings. It's also a good way to wash off extra fatigue and give a nice mental unload.

Cluster Sets, the Intervals Training of Strength and Power

Using cluster sets is a great way to increase strength in a short period of time. Cluster sets work to increase the speed or velocity of lifts over a set or increase the volume of intensity in a session.

Clusters are easy to program and can be done across a variety of loading schemes. Simply break down your set into smaller chunks or cluster and add a very short rest in between each cluster of 10 – 30 seconds based on intensity and desired outcome.

Example Sets:

- 3 sets of 3 x 3 with 15 seconds rest ( 3 Reps rest 15s 3 Reps rest 15s 3 Reps rest 15s) Rest 3 minutes and repeat for 3 total working sets.

Clusters can be done using flat loading od in a pyramid fashion (eg. 3 – 2 – 1), ascending loading (eg. 3 x 3, 3 x 2, 3 x 1) or any similar loading pattern based on outcome.

Due to the short break you should be able to maintain power or velocity over the set and lift at a higher intensity.
