Last week, our PMI Queensland community came together to explore a topic that feels more relevant than ever: how we build relationships, influence outcomes and connect with people in an increasingly AI-driven world.

A big thank you to William Farmer from Dale Carnegie Australia for sharing practical insights inspired by - How to Win Friends and Influence People. While the book was first published nearly 90 years ago, many of its principles still resonate today. Listening with genuine interest, understanding different perspectives, building trust and communicating effectively remain at the heart of successful leadership and project delivery.

What made the evening particularly valuable was the discussion and engagement from our members. It was encouraging to hear different perspectives on how project professionals are navigating change, embracing new technologies and continuing to develop the human skills that make the biggest difference.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, both in person and online, and to Troocoo Brisbane for generously hosting the event.

As project managers, we're often focused on plans, schedules and deliverables. Last week was a great reminder that behind every successful project are relationships, conversations and people.

Around the middle of April, our Leadership Team, consisting of the Board and Executive Leadership, stepped away from the day-to-day and spent a weekend focusing on the future of PMI Queensland and the community we serve.

There was plenty of discussion, healthy debate, shared experiences, and no shortage of ideas. More importantly, there was a genuine commitment from everyone in the room to ensure PMI Queensland continues to be a place where project professionals can learn, connect, grow and give back.

As we looked ahead to FY27, one aspiration resonated across every conversation: creating a Bigger and Better PMI Queensland.

That means delivering greater value for our 1000+ members, strengthening our volunteer community, fostering meaningful partnerships, and creating experiences that help project professionals navigate an ever-changing world.

The plans are taking shape, the ideas are becoming actions, and we're excited for what lies ahead.

A huge thank you to all of our volunteer leaders who generously contribute their time, expertise and enthusiasm to help make PMI Queensland what it is today.

We're only just getting started.

Projects are delivered by people.

That was one of the key themes from our recent PMI Queensland Career Club Clinic with Tanya Abbey.

As Project Managers, we're often surrounded by project plans, status reports and delivery milestones. Yet throughout the evening, the conversation kept returning to a simple reality: communication, trust and relationships often have the biggest impact on project outcomes.

One of the highlights of the session was the opportunity for genuine conversation. Attendees shared experiences, challenges and lessons learned from their own projects, creating the kind of discussion that often continues long after the event finishes.

A sincere thank you to Tanya Abbey for sharing her insights, experience and practical perspective with our community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the discussion. Your willingness to share, learn and connect is what makes the PMI Queensland community so special.

Breaking news for project managers:

AI still refuses to join difficult stakeholder meetings on your behalf.

We checked.

So for now, PMs still need to handle:
• the “quick chat” that turns into a 45-minute escalation
• the stakeholder who says “all good” and then emails your sponsor
• and the classic:
“We’re aligned”… when absolutely nobody is aligned 😅

That’s why human skills are becoming more valuable, not less.
