Sink or swim....Have you ever had a new team member start, and then a few months down the track you feel disappointed in their performance? Then you stress about what to do about it?

Commonly, this occurs as a result of the old 'Sink or Swim' method of leading being used....throw them in the deep end and see if they swim! This obviously isn't really a method of leadership, but it is unfortunately something that many managers inadvertently do to new team members. They bring in a new employee, point them to their desk, and then just watch and wait for them to swim feverishly to get up to speed and prove themselves; or drown in the deep end, never able to impress.

Once you have the system in place, it’s just a matter of making sure you and your leaders have the skills to conduct performance conversations. Like any other technical skill in the workplace, this is something that needs to be learned and practiced, even in experienced managers. We aren’t born with these skills!

I get a real kick out of tailoring programs to help organisations of all sizes to set their employees up for performance success.

Are you a business leader who is feeling the weight of challenging economic times? Client’s I work with are telling me they are:

•Burnt out. Experiencing general exhaustion and lack of motivation for work
•Stressed & not sleeping due to worry about a downturn in business
•Fearful of uncertainty about what’s to come

If any of these hit a bit close to home, here’s some of the things I work through with clients to keep their motivation up:

1. Making time for activities outside work that replenish personal energy; being consistent with it and committed to it. Do something physical, get some sunshine, swim in the ocean.
2. Keeping mindset strong. Speak to a mentor, book in coaching sessions, listen to some mindset podcasts etc. We can get stuck in our negative thoughts and need someone else’s perspective to help us out of it.
3. If business is quiet, this is NOT the time to do nothing out of fear. Choose expansion rather than retraction.
This is the time you get your house in order – put the policies and procedures you’ve been talking about for years done, work on business improvements, deal with the employee performance issue you’ve been avoiding, improve your online presence etc
4. Do some personal or career development – learn a new skill, take a course, meditate, read a few self-help books
5. Be more intentional about where you spend both your time and money. Consider your options and choose the things that will bring you closer to where you want to be.

Is performance in your workplace feeling a little lacklustre?

It's that time of year where the holidays we just had feel like they were 3 years ago, and next Christmas feels like it's a decade away!

So for leaders the challenge begins with how to motivate their employees when performance has dropped. For many, the natural reaction would be to start micro-managing. To hone in on individual team member activity and perhaps give more direction, watch more closely, maybe even schedule more meetings. But these actions may be counter intuitive...

What if instead of looking outward, you instead look inward?

Is there something that you as the leader can do to motivate your employees?

Last week I presented to a group of leaders on behalf of Leadership Collective Australia on the topic of "Attracting and Retaining Multi-generational Workforces".

It's a topic that always generates animated discussion, but served up some great reminders:

* Workplaces are rapidly changing, for the first time in history we potentially have 5 generations working side by side;

* Workers of different generations are motivated by different things, communicate in different ways, and have different values;

* the key to leading age diverse workforces is to adapt your engagement efforts to be personalized to each individual employee;

* Quality communication and adaptable leadership is more important than ever!
