Social Media: Friend or Foe

Social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, allowing us to connect with friends, family and even strangers from all over the world. While social media has undoubtedly brought many benefits, it has also had a significant impact on people's mental health, particularly in terms of self-image, self-confidence, and a sense of responsibility.

One of the most significant impacts of social media on people's mental health is the impact it has on self-image and self-confidence. Social media platforms are full of images of seemingly perfect people living their best lives, which can be incredibly damaging to those who don't feel like they measure up. People often compare themselves to these images and feel like they fall short, leading to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem and even depression.

Social media has contributed to the phenomenon of "care about other's opinions," where people are constantly seeking validation and approval from others. People often post pictures or updates to receive likes, comments, and shares, which can contribute to a sense of self-worth that is tied to external validation. This can become problematic when people become so dependent on external validation that they lose sight of their own values and beliefs.

Gaslighting is another issue that can arise from social media use. Gaslighting is a manipulative tactic used to make someone question their own reality, and it can be particularly harmful when it occurs online. For example, someone may post a comment on an article that is intended to draw in other comments and to make the recipient doubt themselves.

Social media can also lead to a sense of responsibility that can be overwhelming for some people. They often feel the need to constantly be connected and to respond to messages and notifications immediately, leading to a sense of pressure and anxiety that can be difficult to manage.

While there are undoubtedly benefits to social media use, it's important to be aware of the potential risks and to take steps to protect ourselves and others. This can include limiting our social media use, taking breaks when necessary, and seeking support from friends, family, and mental health professionals when we need it. By doing so, we can help to mitigate the potential negative impact of social media and maintain our mental health and well-being.

How Do You Choose Your Priorities?

Yes! We choose our priorities!!

Here’s a quick 5-step strategy to set your priorities:

1) Assess your values: Reflect on what’s meaningful to you in life. This provides a compass for decision-making.
2) Break down goals: Divide large goals into actionable steps to make them less overwhelming.
3) Use the urgency-importance matrix: Categorise tasks based on urgency and importance to prioritise.
4) Schedule time realistically: Block out time on your calendar for priority tasks first before adding other activities.
5) Practice saying no: Decline or delegate less critical tasks to focus time on top priorities.

Unlocking Success in the New Financial Year: The Power of Coaching and Counselling

As the New Financial Year ushers in, it brings with it a fresh aura of possibilities, a clean slate to write our stories, and renewed aspirations to achieve success. It is an opportune time to set goals, and more importantly, to plan for their successful realisation. What often sets successful individuals apart is not merely the goals they set, but the meticulous planning that goes into achieving them. In this pursuit, coaching and counselling can play a pivotal role across all professions, businesses, and roles.

One of the greatest challenges in setting and achieving goals is identifying what those goals should be in the first place. This is where coaching and counselling can be instrumental. Qualified coaches and counsellors are trained to ask the right questions that stimulate introspection, enabling individuals to explore their talents, passions, and aspirations. This process aids in the creation of well-defined, realistic, and meaningful goals.

Once the goals are set, achieving them often involves overcoming obstacles, developing new skills, and changing habits. Here, a coach can provide the necessary guidance, support, and motivation. They can help to create a structured plan, identify potential challenges, and develop strategies to overcome them. The coach's external perspective can add valuable insights that might be overlooked when planning solo, and their experience can help to avoid common pitfalls.

Counselling, on the other hand, is a tool that can be used to manage the emotional and psychological aspects of this journey. Setting and working towards goals can be stressful and challenging. There might be fears, insecurities, and past experiences that can hinder progress. A counsellor can help individuals navigate through these emotional roadblocks, providing strategies to manage stress, boost confidence, and maintain focus.

Coaching and counselling can benefit all professions and roles. For entrepreneurs, they can provide strategies for business growth and managing stress. For professionals, they can help navigate career progression, work-life balance, and interpersonal relationships. For students, they can assist with study techniques, time management, and dealing with academic pressure. The principles of goal setting, planning, overcoming obstacles, and personal growth are universal, making coaching and counselling invaluable.

So, let's embrace the power of coaching and counselling to set meaningful goals, plan strategically, navigate challenges, and stay emotionally balanced. Remember, success doesn't just happen; it's planned for. I’d love to help you to be well-equipped for success.
Cheers Gail
