What Episode 4 Is About?
In Episode 4 of The Success Tax, I want to talk about something that has played a huge role throughout my life and career — community.
I take you back to 1993, when I first entered the professional speaking industry. I had confidence from years of professional basketball, but speaking was a completely different world. I didn't know the rules, I didn't know many of the people, and there were times when I genuinely felt like I didn't belong.
Then I found a speaking community that welcomed me, challenged me and shared its knowledge with me. I started learning from people who had already travelled the road I was trying to navigate. My knowledge grew, but more importantly, my confidence grew. I learned that when people feel like they belong, they're far more willing to contribute.
That's why this episode isn't just about my story. It's about leadership today.
There could be someone sitting in your organisation right now who feels exactly like I did in 1993. They're in the meeting, they're on the team and they've technically been given a seat at the table — but inside they're still wondering, “Do I really belong here?”
I also share how I apply this lesson today at NLR Water, Fire, Mould Restoration Group, where one of the things I love doing is bringing clients, partners and industry professionals together. I don't believe every introduction has to result in business for NLR. Sometimes the greatest value we can provide is simply connecting two good people who should know each other.
That's really what Episode 4 is about: moving beyond networking and intentionally building communities that matter.
Because I've learned something over the past three decades:
A network is about who you know. A community is about what you build together.
In 1993, I needed someone to invite me into the room. Today, I'm fortunate enough to be in a position where I can open that room for somebody else.
