Adam Grant talks about Culture Carriers, the people in your organisation who, after just 15 minutes with them, tell you more about how the business really works than any handbook or onboarding pack ever could.

They don’t just talk about culture.
They embody it.

Adam suggests these people should be front and centre when welcoming new team members, because culture is caught faster than it’s taught.

The same principle applies when you’re navigating workplace change.
When you identify and activate your Culture Carriers as ambassadors for a change program, the impact multiplies.

Here’s just a few ways activating your Culture Carriers delivers:

1️⃣ They’re invested in the outcome and share the message authentically and positively from the grass roots.
2️⃣ You’re able to create real leadership development opportunities through coaching, learning and hands-on experience
3️⃣ They help spread the load — enabling conversations to happen across and through the business, at all levels not just from the top
4️⃣ They gather and share valuable insight from people on the ground into sentiment, concerns and what’s really landing

This is just one of the ways we help organisations build internal capability and momentum through our Workplace Strategy and Change Leadership at COMUNiTI.

Have you activated your Culture Carriers yet? Get in touch!

Notice how some days your office is buzzing, other days it feels like a ghost town. Monday’s feel more like The Hunger Games as you stake out your workspace in an attempt to bring your team together, while come Friday there are tumbleweeds rolling through the office and you may as well have stayed at home!

This issue here isn’t a space problem. It’s a behavioural one.

Team rhythms. Space etiquettes. Storage expectations. These are usually what’s missing. The space was created, the doors were opened and your people made up their own rules.

So how do you reset? Try these…

1️⃣ Team Rhythms. Engage teams in the conversation. When do they need to be together? What are they wanting to achieve when they are? Who across the business do they need to be working with? Empowering teams to develop their own rhythms invites agency and when teams have agency, performance improves.

2️⃣ Space Etiquettes. What and how are each of the spaces in your workplace to be used for? What is expected when using them; timeframe, noise levels, number of people, activity? Setting out clear expectations for each type of space ensures everyone understands whats ok and what’s not. It also enables your people to think more strategically about how and where they come together to get the most out of their interactions.

3️⃣ Storage Expectations. This is a big one! So often workstations are used as a daily dumping ground for personal belongings over the locker. The impact, a sea of empty workstations, holding people’s belongings who are off in meetings, yet nowhere for your people to sit. The solution, reinforce the space etiquettes of workstation usage, redefine when you should use a desk and when you should use a locker. Consider localised storage so that people have their personal belongings close to their work area.

In our blog “From Empty Desks to Engaged Teams” you’ll learn how leaders to are reimagining how to use the space they have.

Developing a workplace strategy for your organisation, doesn’t mean you have to start with a whole new workplace. Sometimes the right strategy is to rethink the way you’re using your existing spaces.

Surely we’ve learned by now that “mandating” office attendance doesn’t work… but what does?

When we flip the narrative to focus on “moments that matter”, employees know their commute is worth it.

Those moments could be:
• Coaching or mentoring with their leader
• Weekly team meetings or social catch-ups (yes, Taco Tuesdays count)
• Training, development, induction, or onboarding events
• New projects kicking off or team forming
• Whole-of-company or divisional gatherings (think awards, updates, special business announcement).

Workplace communities create their own routines and rituals, just like we do in our society based communities – think team anthems at your local sports game, Sunday Church gatherings, or that weekly bike ride with your mates.

In the workplace, this shows up as:
• Morning huddles, birthday celebrations, and morning teas
• Years-of-service recognition events
• Anchor days when the whole team works together in person
• All-hands, leadership forums, town halls, quarterly catch-ups
• Project showcases, awards nights, or even Friday afternoon drinks to share stories of wins and lessons learned.

When the office is about connection, culture, and shared purpose, it stops being “just a place to work” and becomes a place to belong.

If your workplace only looks good, you’ve already missed the point.

As Steve Jobs famously stated “Design is not just what it looks like. Design is how it works”.

If you don’t understand the opportunity to reinvent your workplace — to resolve the core issues, reshape behaviours, and reimagine how your people work best — then all you’re doing is giving an old problem a facelift.

Because a workplace uplift, rebuild, or move isn’t about making things pretty. It’s about making them perform.

The COMUNiTI team are rebels with a cause. We challenge the status quo, ask the uncomfortable questions, and dig deeper to uncover what your organisation actually needs from its workplace.

We bring the strategy, the insight, and the clarity that turns your space into a catalyst for community, culture, and performance.

The workplace is changing. They’re no longer places where you need to go “to work”

Well-designed workplaces foster connection and belonging, authentically embodying the purpose, values and brand experience of an organisation.

Our Workplace Dynamics Blueprint takes a holistic approach to understanding your workplace, based on the five pillars that underpin the workplace dynamics of every organisation.

By looking at the interconnectivity of the seemingly disparate functions of your organisation, we can identify the patterns, roadblocks, friction points and bright spots that give your workplace its unique rhythm and heartbeat. These insights help us understand the layers of interaction at an individual, team and organisational level, and how they contribute to the operation of the workplace.

Whether you’re looking to elevate your team’s way of working in your existing space, or you have a bold vision to create an entirely new workplace, our Blueprint is the strategic starting point. It will guide your organisation to optimise your environment, improve employee experience and performance, and deliver value to your bottom line.

Mapien’s old office was designed in such a way that it meant people rarely bumped into each other. Collaboration was limited, teams were siloed, and despite a strong culture, it was hard to live.

COMUNiTI reimagined their space from a strategic base, to bring connection, flexibility and their culture to life. Through intentional planning and human flow to collaborative hubs, quiet areas, soft seating, and even a dedicated reflection space. The result? Cross departmental interaction naturally improved sharing ideas, clients and solutions across business units, collectively working smarter together.

The payoff isn’t just productivity. Organisations like Mapien show what happens when people-first workplaces are built: multiple years running Great Place To Work, with 90% of employees saying it’s a great place to work (vs 60% in a typical Aussie company).

Eight years on, the strategy we created continues to deliver results. Teams are still thriving, collaboration remains strong, and Mapien continues to be recognised for its culture and excellence.

58% of workplaces are failing to office an employees a great experience at work, with 16% categorised as “obstructor” workpalces, meaning their physical space is actively hindering employees from being at their best.

If you want a space that truly supports your people and drives performance, you need more than a just a place for people come and “do their job”. You need a clear framework that connects your purpose, your culture, and how your people actually work.

So how do you this?
By designing environments that intentionally shape how people feel, behave and connect. At COMUNiTI we use our Placemaking Framework as the guide.

PURPOSE — the “why” behind the workplace
Clarity of purpose anchors every decision. Why are you asking your people to come to the workplace? What role is it fulfilling? When your workplace reflects why you are asking them to gather and what you’re striving for, people feel aligned and connected to something bigger.

BRAND — the expression of who you are
Your space should embody your story, your values, your mission. From the moment someone walks in, your workplace is a physical representation communicating your identity, values, and aspirations.

BEHAVIOURS — what you want to enable and encourage
Spaces influence actions. By designing for the behaviours you want to see — collaboration, focus, innovation, community — supporting, the rituals, routines and rhythms of your business, your workplace becomes a catalyst for performance.

TOOLS — the systems and support that make work flow
Technology, furniture, resources, and rituals all play a part. The right tools, whether technology, spaces or equipment, empower people to do their best work with ease and confidence.

When Purpose, Brand, Behaviours and Tools come together, the workplace stops being just a location — it becomes a strategic asset that builds community, shapes culture, and elevates performance.

Whilst many organisations might consider their greatest assets to be their people, they’re often leaving a significant factor influencing their performance, open to chance.

Your other greatest asset… your workplace. This environment is shaping the experience, behaviour, and performance of every person who walks through your door.

Right now, hybrid work expectations, return-to-office pressure, cultural drift, and growing disengagement are widening the gap between how people want to work and what workplaces are actually supporting. And while the impact isn’t always loud, it’s absolutely costing organisations.

Workplaces aren’t just spaces. They are communities. Anywhere people gather, collaborate, or share stories, a community forms. Those shared values, rhythms, and moments are what create belonging. A workplace can build that sense of community… or it can slowly chip away at it.

One of the biggest challenges we see is when People & Culture and Property operate in isolation. Misaligned KPIs, competing priorities, and investments made without a clear people-centred strategy ultimately dilute culture rather than strengthen it.

It’s time to rethink the role of the workplace.

Many organisations still treat the creation of a new workplace like a construction project.

High-performing organisations approach it as a lever for transformation. Intentionally shaping behaviour, culture, performance, and connection.

At COMUNiTI, we’ve evolved the traditional People, Place and Tech into something far more human. → Hearts, Bodies, Minds.

HEARTS: The emotional climate and cultural energy that influence how people show up.

BODIES: The physical environment that enables culture — flexible, adaptable, and designed to support meaningful interaction and collaboration.

MINDS: The systems, technology, and processes that give people clarity, autonomy, and the ability to do their best work.

This human centred lens is what the future demands. Because the workplace is no longer where work gets done, it’s the ecosystem that enables your people and your business to thrive.

If you’re ready to unlock the full potential of your people, let’s talk. Whether it’s a workshop within your organisation to surface insights, challenge assumptions, and reimagine how your workplace can elevate performance and culture, or a quick 15-minute Teams call to get to know each other, we’d love to help!

What happens when the way your people work evolves… but your workplace doesn’t?

Many workplaces have not evolved to keep pace with the new ways their people want and need to work. The impact is disengaged employees, low attendance, siloed teams and poor communication.

Leaders are grappling with the shifting nature of hybrid work, the cascading impact on organisational culture and the conflicting perspectives about what to do next.

Solving these new and complex problems requires a fresh approach - one that bridges the disparate disciplines of People & Culture, Property and Facilities and Technology.

It requires us to reimagine the design of work itself and challenge the status quo, shifting individual and organisational mindsets.

Is your next office move the one that could transform your entire business?
What if your next office relocation wasn’t just about signing a lease — but about resetting your entire business?

In this podcast episode, Mel sits down with Stephen Fryer, Greater Sydney Leader at Northrop Consulting Engineers, to unpack how a simple lease expiry became the catalyst for their workplace transformation that redefined leadership, engagement, and innovation.

Here’s the kicker: before the move, only 32% of the Northrop team were actually coming into the office on an average day. Our workplace strategy uncovered why people weren’t coming in — and what changes were needed to make them ‘want’ to be in the office.

🎧 In the episode, Mel and Stephen cover:
• Turning a lease expiry into a growth opportunity
• Designing a workplace people actually want to come to
• Engaging teams with creative culture tools, including mascots!
• Driving inclusive leadership through change
• Key lessons for any business navigating transformation

This is a must-listen for leaders ready to think bigger about space, culture, and the future of work.

Want to know how to move from “spaces that house people” to “places that empower teams”?
