Christmas feels ages away… until it's not 😅

Most modern awards require 28 days' written notice before you can direct staff to take annual leave over a shutdown. It sounds like a lot of lead time, but it comes around fast.

A little planning now means no scrambling in November. And it's always worth checking your specific award, since some have their own rules.

Card surcharges are officially banned from 1 October 💳

If your POS or invoicing software still has a surcharge automatically added at checkout, it's time for a settings check.

What to do:
✔️ Check your POS/payment settings for auto-applied surcharges
✔️ Turn off surcharge line items if they're still switched on
✔️ Review your pricing to make sure it still covers your costs

When's the last time you checked that your business data is actually backed up? 💾

Most cloud software (Xero, MYOB, and other programs) handles a lot of this automatically, but it's still worth knowing where your data lives, who can access it, and what your recovery options are if something goes wrong.

A simple check worth doing this month:
✅ Confirm your software's backup/history settings
✅ Review who has login access (and remove anyone who shouldn't)
✅ Make sure your own devices have up-to-date antivirus/security software/2FA

Peace of mind is worth the ten minutes it takes. If you'd like a hand reviewing your setup, just ask.

"They're a contractor, they've got an ABN" isn't always the full story, is their ABN still active, are they registered for GST 📋

The ATO looks at the whole working relationship, not just the label, when deciding whether someone's really an employee or a contractor. Get it wrong, and it can mean backdated super, PAYG issues, and penalties down the track. The Taxable Payments Annual Report for certain industries will also pick up on contractors charging incorrectly, if they are / are not registered for GST and if charging GST when not registered.

⚙️ Setting up bank rules so transactions code themselves, or turning on auto invoice reminders
⚙️ Automatic savings transfers (for tax, super, or a rainy day)

Small daily habits > last-minute scrambling. Every time. 💡

"Small daily habits in your bookkeeping lead to much more clarity at BAS time, much quicker."

Think: reconciling transactions as they come in, snapping a photo of receipts straight away, checking your numbers weekly instead of quarterly. None of it feels like much on its own, but come BAS time, it's the difference between clarity and chaos.

Three things worth tidying up in your accounts this month:
🧹 Chase up outstanding invoices sitting in accounts receivable
🧹 Reconcile any transactions that have been sitting "unmatched" for a while
🧹 Clean out old subscriptions or expenses you're still paying for but don't use

True story: Sally's own myGov account got locked out last week after 5 incorrect password attempts 😳

Thankfully, her back-up systems worked. She got an email and a text notifying her straight away.

It's a good reminder that scammers love tax time, and ATO and myGov impersonation scams tend to ramp up around now. Fake emails, texts, and even phone calls designed to look official.

Payday Super has been live for a couple of months now, how are your systems holding up? 👀

If you haven't already, now's a good time to check:
✅ Has any super bounced or failed to process?
✅ Is your clearing house getting contributions to the fund within the required timeframe?
✅ Are you actually processing super on payday, not after?

Small gaps now can turn into bigger problems (and ATO attention) down the track. If you're not 100% sure your systems are keeping up, let's have a chat and get it sorted before it becomes a bigger job.
