Last weekend I had the absolute priviledge to attend and compete in the Admirals Cup 50th Aniversary Regatta. In doing so I was reminded of the role human endeavour plays in the business world. Privately funded Australian teams entered the Admirals Cup which was at the time was the pinnacle of the sport of offshore yacht racing, and won it at their second attempt in 1967 ! There is little doubt that this success inspired generations of yachtsmen and women to compete at the highest levels internationally. It likely seeded our successful challenge of the Americas Cup in 1983, wrestling the Auld Mug from the USA for the first time in 132 years. A moment that placed Australia firmly on the world stage. This I can attest to having grown up in the Northern hemisphere. Without the endeavours of Sir James Hardy, Syd Fischer and Greame Lambert to name but a few, one could question whether there would have been a 1983 AC win, and without that defining moment, who knows where Australia as a nation would be. Dream big, you never know where it will lead.
