Practical Plant & Soil Health for Better Gardens, Better Landscapes & Better Outcomes | Presented by Annette Irish, explored the relationship between soil health, plant performance and long-term landscape success. Educating attendees on the warning signs that can be overlooked in everyday landscape construction and maintenance, and how an understanding what is happening below ground can help prevent plant decline and create healthier, more resilient landscapes.

The Future Voices of Horticulture | Ash Walker, James Feez and Kira Platt-Behrens shared their own journeys into horticulture and highlighted just how diverse the career pathways within the industry can be. Exploring opportunities available to emerging horticulturists, including AIH scholarships and international programs such as the Global Footprints Scholarship they encouraged the next generation to make connections, keep learning and explore where a career in horticulture can take them.

The Importance of Increasing Biodiversity to Our Landscapes, Gardens, Nurseries & Garden Centres | Landscape Architect and Horticultural Consultant Arno King turned the conversation to biodiversity and the important role our industry can play in increasing the diversity of plants used across our landscapes. Arno explored why our planting palette is narrowing, the impacts of declining botanical diversity, and how the industry can increase biodiversity through plant selection, specification, cultivation and sales.

LQ EDUCATION PROGRAM | TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE SESSIONS

The LQ Education Program at the Greenscapes Expo, included sessions that support better landscape construction and better outcomes on site:

Concrete in the Landscape: From Mix Design to Finished Surface | Gregory van Rooyen from BG&E took attendees through the fundamentals of working with concrete in the landscape. Including mix design, joints and finishes, cracking and cost control to how decisions made at specification and construction stage can impact the finished product and its long-term performance.

When Walls Fail: Engineering Principles for Safer Retaining Wall Construction | With 42 years of Queensland project experience, civil and structural engineer Ching Meng Tan unpacked why retaining walls fail and the engineering and compliance principles contractors need to understand. Using real Queensland examples, they explored drainage, footings, surcharge loading and common costly mistakes.

Irrigation Workshop: Understanding What Happens When Water Leaves the Pipe | Stuart Alexander from Irrigation Australia brought irrigation into the practical mix, looking beyond the pipe to build a better understanding of how water behaves once it reaches the landscape and what that means for effective irrigation outcomes.

Wood That Endures: Everything You Have Learnt So Far Is Wrong | Edgar (Ted) Stubbersfield, International External Timber Design Consultant, challenged long-held assumptions about external timber. Ted highlighted the importance of careful design, detailed drawings and getting the fundamentals right to avoid common problems and achieve timber structures that endure.

Four different topics, but a common focus of providing landscape professionals practical knowledge to make more informed decisions, reduce avoidable problems and deliver better outcomes on the ground. PROUD MEMBER HIGHLIGHT | Disc Landscapes & Construction

The Woombye Streetscape had been years in the making. Since 2020, residents, businesses, community groups and visitors had been sharing their vision for the heart of Woombye, and when it came time to build, Landscape Queensland Proud Member Disc Landscapes & Construction delivered it.

The construction scope was substantial. Earthworks, drainage, pathway grading, coloured broom-finished and exposed sandblasted concrete pavements, feature stairways, raised pedestrian crossings, galvanised handrails, lighting and a full suite of street furniture were all delivered across the project. Softscape works including street trees, lawn, garden beds, mulch and planting brought shade and greenery to the footpath.

But the details that speak loudest are the ones that reflect the community's own priorities. A new central gathering space in front of the School of Arts Hall. A drinking fountain with a dog water bowl. Improved crossings designed for people of all ages and abilities. The groundwork for a heritage trail celebrating Woombye's story.

This project is a reminder of what landscape contractors make possible in the places people live every day.

LQ EDUCATION PROGRAM | FUTURE LANDSCAPES: BRISBANE'S LIVING INFRASTRUCTURE LEGACY & THE NEXT SIX YEARS PANEL

This session formed part of the LQ Education Program at the recent 2026 Greenscapes Expo.

Bringing together Omar Barragan, Urbano Design; Damian Thompson, LatStudios; Andrew Bottomley, TLCC & LQIA President; Michael Casey, Evergreen Infrastructure; and Brett Lentz, Pradella Developments, this panel tackled an important question for our industry: what will Brisbane’s push towards living infrastructure mean for the landscape sector over the next six years?

With the Brisbane Green Factor, Green Grid and the broader legacy opportunities associated with Brisbane 2032 influencing how our city and region will grow, the discussion explored how policy and design intent translate into successful outcomes on the ground.

The panel shared perspectives from across design, development and landscape delivery, discussing the opportunities and challenges of delivering green infrastructure at scale and the role collaboration will play in achieving lasting outcomes.

Most importantly, the conversation looked ahead at what our industry needs to understand and prepare for as living infrastructure becomes an increasingly important part of Queensland’s future cities and communities.

PROUD MEMBER HIGHLIGHT | Lynx Landscaping
When a garden is designed to be seen from within, the glass stops being a boundary and becomes a frame. The view from the room turns into part of the planting, and the line between inside and out quietly disappears.

Landscape Queensland Proud Member Lynx Landscaping delivered this at Broadbeach Waters, a highly detailed landscape that seamlessly integrates with the home's striking contemporary architecture.

The project involved extensive site preparation, grading, drainage, custom steel edging, irrigation, feature boulder installation, premium turfing and the construction of complex garden spaces throughout the waterfront property. Hundreds of plants, advanced specimens and feature trees were carefully positioned to create a layered tropical landscape, anchored by a remarkable 40-year-old cloud-pruned Japanese Black Pine sourced after a nationwide search.

Working on a canal-front site presented significant construction challenges. King tides impacted installation works, while restricted access required materials, soils, drainage systems and feature elements to be carefully manoeuvred and installed by hand. The team adapted the design and construction methodology to ensure long-term landscape performance in the waterfront environment.

The result is a technically sophisticated landscape that balances bold architectural form with lush planting, creating a distinctive residential environment that feels both timeless and uniquely connected to its setting.

Projects like this demonstrate the craftsmanship, problem-solving and construction expertise required to deliver high-end residential landscapes at the highest level.

LQ EDUCATION PROGRAM | GREEN WALLS, ROOFS & CITY GREENING: LIVING SYSTEMS IN PRACTICE

This session was part of the LQ Education Program, offered at the recent 2026 Greenscapes Expo.

Presented by Michael Casey from Evergreen Infrastructure, this session took a practical look at the growing role of green roofs, living walls and integrated greening in creating cooler, greener and more resilient urban environments.

With Brisbane moving towards 2032 and increasing attention on living infrastructure, Michael shared his extensive experience delivering green infrastructure projects across Australia and explored what it takes to make these systems work in practice.

From system and species selection to structural considerations, planting design, irrigation, maintenance and long-term performance, the session highlighted that successful city greening is about much more than the finished result. These are living systems that need to be properly specified, installed and managed for the long term.

LQ EDUCATION PROGRAM | ESTIMATING + QUOTING WORKSHOP

Getting your quoting right is the difference between a job that pays and one that eats into your margin. So a switched-on bunch of LQ members jumped in to sharpen their estimating and quoting skills at our recent full-day workshop.

It was a lively day, with members from all over Queensland and every corner of the industry working together and collaborating. We covered plenty of practical ground including estimating theory, spotting the pitfalls that quietly cost you, and unpacking labour.

Several of our Board Members also shared how they build accuracy into their own estimating and quoting with simple, elegant solutions from experience-led industry leaders who catch the bigger picture, every time. Beyond the prepared material, the day was strengthened with real-world examples and hands-on support throughout. Those on the day were also able to test drive a new digital tool we've been developing (more on that coming soon).

A big thank you to all who came along. Taking time out of the business to work on the business is never easy, but it's an investment in your business and your team. There's real value in stepping away and connecting with the industry, and a good reminder that you're not doing this on your own.

Our Education Program is built for our members, shaped by real industry pressures and guided by industry standards.

Greenscapes + Green Expo Wrap Up
What a great two days for Queensland’s landscape industry.

It was fantastic to see so many LQ members at Greenscapes + Green Expo — connecting with industry, discovering new products and ideas, and getting involved in the Landscape Queensland Education Program.

The Education Program was a real highlight, with waitlisted sessions, strong attendance and plenty of valuable conversations. From green infrastructure and sustainable landscapes to biosecurity, technical talks and workshops, the program covered the topics that matter most to our industry. Incredible panels on Brisbane's future living infrastructure and the next generation of our workforce brought expert thinking and honest conversation to the forefront

Another highlight was hearing Jamie Durie OAM share his perspective on creating greener, more meaningful and sustainable connections with our outdoor environments, followed by a Q&A led by Tessa Leggo from Fred St.

A big thank you to our presenters, the LQ Board and everyone who stopped by the LQ Meet & Greet across the two days. Special thanks also to LQ members Urban Turf Solutions and Plantmark for their contributions to the stand.

There’s plenty more to come from the conversations and ideas shared at the Expo. Stay tuned.
