When we first meet with a client, they often tell us:

"I've got a job description, training material, I've got lots of stuff documented and around. I've got a really good idea of what all my team are doing out there, the bosses know what people are doing, the supervisors have an idea. Surely we're good?"

Having worked with several organisations, we know there are a few uncomfortable truths we are likely about to uncover when we hear that.

Usually, the position descriptions are outdated. The training material is not current. And the documents don’t reflect what people are really doing.

That’s why the Discovery phase of a project is so important. We unpack the process flow drawings, policies and procedures, safety systems, emergency response documents and training. We have conversations with your people.

Because the knowledge management systems we develop must be current and reflect what people are actually doing to be valuable for your business ongoing.

A thought for the week ahead.

How can you be better at the conversations in your workplace this week?

Can you level up an email to a phone call? A phone call to a teams meeting? A teams meeting to a coffee in person?

Can you listen with intent and make sure the other person is heard?

It might just make your interactions with your people better.

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.

The TDG team always values connection and conversation. It is vital. Even through the complexity of covid, we regularly aimed to have a coffee – on Zoom, or Teams, or in person when we could – to connect with clients and colleagues.

If you’d like to connect, virtually or in person, then holler. Connect with Andrew and Louise here on LinkedIn, and send a message.

We are sure it will be a cracking conversation for us both.

From our MD, Andrew

One of the keys of managing the tension between busy and full is learning how to say "No" to the wrong things and how to say "Yes" to the right things.

The distinction there for me is there is an absolutely appropriate place to say, "No, thanks. I'm full."

Or alternatively, if it's your boss or someone, organisation, client asking you for something, "We can do that. What don't you want done?"

Because when you get to that place of busy, you're going to be less effective and you're going to enjoy it less.
Nobody wins there.

So as you go about the day, have a think about whether you're busy or full.

And as you talk to people and they say, "Oh, I'm so busy," my favourite comment to those people is, "Well, that's really sad. How can I help you get more focused and get more on purpose?"
