With great regret we start the week with news of another drowning and our thoughts go out to the families and friends of those it affects.
No matter how compliant a Barrier may be it is still no match for supervision.
Take a moment and think to yourselves.....
Why is it we always take precautions to ensure the safe keeping of expensive jewellery, cars, homes, wallets, keys etc. except for those things we cherish the most that can’t be replaced our children, brothers, sisters, mum’s, dad’s, cousins, aunties, uncles, grandparents etc. We tell ourselves when we are by the water.
Take a moment and be honest to yourself and think have you ever thought or said,
”it’s all good they know how to swim” or “there are plenty of people around” or “my kids have had swimming lessons”.
Drowning is a silent killer there is no splashing around to get people’s attention it can happen to even the strongest swimmers and the most confident in the water It can happen in a heartbeat. People today are so easily distracted by modern technology (phones, iPad, televisions etc.).
If there are people in the water the best thing to do is put the screens away and concentrate on what is most important to you. Does it really matter if you miss that phone call? Is your social media (Facebook, Instagram, Linked In etc) that important to distract you from your role of a protector?
No!
Next time you are by the water put away your phones and/or other things that may distract you and watch your children, friends, relatives even other people in the water.
Supervision is the only thing that can stop a person becoming a statistic, be that person who could make a difference.
