When I walk through Barrambin / Victoria Park, I don’t just see trees. I feel peace. I feel space to breathe. I feel the old stories sitting quietly in the land.
Today, I stood with people from different backgrounds, cultures and lived experiences. I listened to their stories and their connection to Barrambin. Some spoke about bringing their children here. Some spoke about walking these paths every day. Others spoke about the wildlife, the trees and the calm this place gives them.
And I know some people may not care. Maybe only a small number. But the majority of people need spaces like this. We need places to step away from the noise, breathe fresh air and look after our mental health.
So many people are already carrying stress, pressure and heaviness. Green space gives people room to feel free. Concrete does not do that. Concrete closes in. Country opens us up.
Right in the heart of Brisbane, Barrambin gives us something rare. A place to slow down. A place for families to gather. A place for children to run. A place for animals to live. A place for Community to feel connected, away from the rush of everyday life.
Barrambin is living history. Known as “The Windy Place”, it holds culture, story, waterways, wildlife and ancient trees believed to be hundreds of years old — some estimated up to 700 years.
You don’t just replace that. You don’t just rebuild that.
“Would they pour concrete over Central Park in New York? So why is it okay here?”— Joshua Sanderson
And once this is gone… what will this space look like then?
Where do the animals go?
Where do our children go to feel nature, freedom and peace?
Where do we go when the city becomes too loud?
Barrambin is worth the fight.
For Country.
For Community.
For future generations.
For all of us. 🖤💛❤️
