Can a house have a personality?

This home had a prime waterfront location and plenty of square footage, but visually? It was completely blank.

A home doesn't get personality by accident. It isn't about throwing in random angles or endless glass. It comes down to intentional choices, selecting materials, textures, and warmth that give the structure real life.

If your home feels big but blank, remember: it’s not a size problem. It’s a personality problem. And that is completely fixable.

Let’s talk cladding because there are a few I'm loving on facades right now. No.1 - Standing seam and other vertical profiles are having a real moment, especially in warm neutrals rather than stark white or black. No.2 - Charred timber-look cladding in the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban style. It adds real depth and richness, without the practical drawbacks of the real thing. No.3 - Fine battens, whether in a colour or a timber-look finish, these are brilliant for adding rhythm and texture in smaller doses. No. 4 - Concrete-look panels are trending too, but they need warming up. Pair them with timber accents or soft landscaping. No. 5 - Breeze blocks are having a lovely resurgence as an accent, especially around entries and privacy screening. No. 6 - And finally - there's render, which I use constantly, almost like a blank canvas. It creates space for everything else to shine. Here's the thing though. It's never really about which cladding you choose. It's about where you place it, and how it works with everything around it.

Natural stone can completely change the way a home feels - adding texture, character and that sense of solidity that can sometimes be missing from a facade. But more stone doesn’t necessarily mean a better result. The type of stone, the way it’s laid, the colours within it and, importantly, how much of it you use all need to work with the scale and style of the home. I generally prefer to use stone as a considered feature rather than covering large areas of the facade. Done well, it can tie together your wall colours, timber, windows and other finishes while giving the home a more grounded, established feel. The key is knowing which stone, where to put it, and when to stop.

Building or renovating a large home? There’s one design mistake I see far too often. You can choose a beautiful stone, gorgeous exterior lights, timber detailing and the perfect roof profile - but if those elements aren’t the right scale for the house, something can still feel off. Larger homes need more than just beautiful selections. The size, proportion and spacing of everything - from columns and lighting to stonework, rooflines and landscaping - needs to work with the size of the home and the property as a whole. This is why I design the entire exterior before any work begins on site. Stop saving exterior inspiration that will never work on your house. When you’re searching Pinterest, Instagram or Google for renovation ideas, don’t just search for a style you love - start with your roofline. Hip, gable, flat, skillion, Dutch gable… adding your current roof type to your search can completely change the inspiration you find. You’ll start seeing homes with a similar underlying shape to yours - which means the ideas you’re saving have a much better chance of actually working on your home. The goal isn’t just to find beautiful houses. It’s to find useful inspiration you can actually apply.

$80K to move. Or $80K to improve? Selling and buying a $900k home in Australia can easily cost $80,000 or more — agent fees, stamp duty, legal costs. Gone, before you've changed a single thing about the house. Now imagine putting that money into the home you already have. If the floor plan works, you're on a good block, and you actually like your neighbours — the only thing missing might be that it just doesn't feel like you anymore. $80k won't do a full inside-and-out renovation. But it can transform a facade, an entry, or a street-facing view — the parts of a home that are hardest to get right, and the ones most people get stuck on. You don't always need to move.
