Should you render your brick home? 🏡 Render can be a brilliant way to modernise an older home, but simply covering the brick isn’t always enough. Once that texture disappears, a façade can quickly start to feel flat. The key is creating balance. If you render, bring personality back through stone, timber-look accents, lighting and layered landscaping. And if you keep the brick, make sure everything you add has enough presence to hold its own alongside such a visually strong material. It’s not really about whether brick or render is better - it’s about making the whole façade work together. Jane

Would you pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for something you’ve never actually seen? When building a new home, plans, elevations and 3D views are essential - but they don’t always reveal how every element of your facade will work together once materials, colours and finishes are applied. And this is why I use colour illustrations for much more than choosing colours. Once I can see the entire facade together, I’m looking at proportion, balance, scale, material placement and all those seemingly small details that can have a surprisingly big impact on the finished home. Is the entry strong enough? Does the garage dominate? Is a window the right proportion? Is there too much of one material? Does the whole facade feel balanced? Even after 30 years as a designer, I use colour illustrations to critique and refine my own designs. Because it’s much better to spot what isn’t quite right before you build it. Jane

Render or cladding? Most facades need both, and the split is the actual decision.

Render makes a wall quiet. Cladding gives you line and shadow. Render everything and it's flat. Clad everything and it's noisy. Roughly 80 / 20 is where most houses land.

And before you render over brick, know that you can't undo it, and you've just taken on a repaint every eight to ten years.

I look for the common threads in the images you’re drawn to - the colours, materials, shapes, textures and architectural details - then work out how to translate those elements onto your particular home. Start with the elements that aren’t changing, choose a timeless main colour, add contrast for depth, introduce natural materials like timber and stone, and always test your colours outside in natural light. The goal? A home that feels current, considered and timeless - without following every trend.

Choosing outdoor tiles? Read this first. Caption - Choosing tiles or pavers for your outdoor renovation or new build. Three things you need to get right. Undertone. Warm whites on the house means a warm-toned paver. Cool grey or cool white means stick with cooler tones. Mixing the two is what makes a space feel slightly off without anyone being able to say why. Never choose from a photo online, and never choose from a small sample in a showroom. Get a physical sample, hold it against your actual house, outside, at different times of day. Then go and find it laid en masse somewhere, because it will look very different at scale. Trust me on this one. Practicality. Very pale, plain finishes show every footprint and mark. A little variation or swirl, or going slightly darker, still gives you that light look and is far easier to live with over the years. Get these three right and everything else you choose has something to sit against.

Most people think a facade design plan starts with sketches. It actually starts with you telling me what you hate about your house.

Here's what the process looks like on my end:

We chat. What's not working, what you're hoping for, what the budget looks like.

I go through your photos, existing plans and anything you've saved on Pinterest, and work out what style actually suits the house (not just what's trending).

I draw up a couple of initial directions for the exterior.

We jump on Zoom and go through them together. This is where things get tweaked, sometimes a lot.

I lock in the details. Cladding, render, paint colours, lighting, the front path, the plants. Every product named.

Final tweaks so it holds together from the street, the driveway and the front door.

You get the full plan and a colour illustration to hand straight to your builder. No guessing on site.

Most people think there are 3-4 decisions for their back yard transformation. This one had hundreds. Wall colour, paving, pool colour. That's where nearly everyone starts, and it's a reasonable place to start, because those are the three things you can see in every photo you've ever saved. Then the list keeps going. Pool interior. Waterline tile. Coping profile. Where the paving changes and why. Feature stone that also screens the neighbours. Cabana roof pitch. Ceiling lighting angled so it isn't in your eyes at dinner. Where the pizza oven flue points relative to the breeze. Built-in seating. Seating in the pool. Towel hooks, or they end up over the good furniture. That's not even half of it. None of these sink a project on their own. Twenty unconsidered ones will, and by then the paving is down and the trades have moved on. Which is why we make every one of them on paper first.
