Are you emphasising the right traits to win the hirer's interest?

Do you have the traits hirers are currently looking for in 2022? Are you emphasizing the right things in your resume? As the world of work changes so ...

I was asked the other day what my number one piece of advice is if you are struggling to write your resume - here it is.

21/06/2022

What do you do when you are overwhelmed with opinions on your resume? This may be controversial, but I think too many comments can be unhelpful. Am I wrong? Or is all feedback good feedback?

Resumes are subjective, and I know that wanting to help comes from a good place, but often what happens is the advice leads people to start double-guessing themselves.

They change something here and add something there and then cut something out and before they know it the document gets away from them.

I tell people that the only opinion that matters, besides your own, is that of the hirer.

Feedback can be helpful but if someone is reading your resume without full context of what you are applying for, then it can actually damage your strategy.

So what do you do with well-meaning advice?

My suggestion is to take feedback on board, but be strategic in what you action.

A better investment of your time is to research the role you are targeting to deepen your understanding of their needs, problems and hopes for the candidate in the role. Then tailor your resume to showcase your fit for these needs and to feature proof of your past successes in helping other organisations to solve similar problems.

Do this and you will create a resume designed to speak to the person that counts - the hirer.

Here’s a great article talking about resume parsing from a hirer perspective.

In the world of contingent hiring, speed and candidate experience are critical drivers of business growth. According to SHRM, 60% of job seekers say they have quit an application due to its complexity or length. With competition for contingent talent at an all time high, a system that enables hiring...

For those who didn’t catch my QUT webinar here’s the one-minute summary of current recruitment trends affecting your job search.

- The market is hot so hirers are using multiple channels to plug opportunities and find talent. Don’t restrict yourself to job boards. You’ll get your eyes on more opportunities if you spread your net.

-Remote and hybrid work means hirers no longer have to restrict themselves to finding talent 30km from the office. Neither do jobseekers. Look outside your own backyard and get comfortable selling your hybrid work skills.

- New tech means hirers can scrape the web and approach applicants before the job even hits the market. Make yourself easy to find. Optimise your LinkedIn profile to include the skills being sought for your target roles.

- Tech like ATS are part of the hiring process but humans are 100% of the ultimate hiring decision. Bypass tech and find other ways to connect and show your talent. Strategic targeting, portfolios of work, introductions and referrals - anything that gets you out of the system and talking to the hirer. If you do have to go via an online application optimise your content to their keywords and keep your format clean and modern.

- Covid taught us we are all just human. Things like pandemic gaps, time out of the workforce for kids or health, restarts and blips, limited experience - these are all part of careers and life. Find organisations who will embrace you and your career warts n all. Find your tribe. Not enough experience - find companies who want to shape and mentor. Returning to work after kids - look for family-friendly hirers. At the same time find ways to refresh your skills or address any shortfalls.

- LinkedIn is becoming a key conduit to candidates but a resume is not the same as your LinkedIn profile. These are different tools - your resume is not your story - it’s your pitch for one specific job. Your LinkedIn profile is a proactive tool for building credibility, connections and relationships. Use them appropriately.

- Virtual hiring has accelerated the use of video interviewing. Get your digital presentation skills honed for both one and two way interviews. Make the most of jobseeker tools like Big Interview being offered by QUT to its alumni.

Huge thanks to Chrissie Peppin and QUT (Queensland University of Technology) for letting me come along today and to all the alumni who asked questions and joined in.
