The backpacker guarantee regional employers relied on just went away.
Finish the required regional work, get another season out of the same worker. That's how it's worked for years.
From this year, second and third year Working Holiday visas move to a ballot. Completing 88 days of regional work for a second year, or six months for a third, only earns a place in the draw. It doesn't guarantee the visa. The caps sit well below last year's numbers, around 45,000 places for a second year against 57,000 who qualified last year, and 5,000 for a third year against 31,000 last year. UK passport holders sit outside this under the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement, though the government has flagged slower processing given how many UK backpackers are now applying. Detailed rules for the new ballot haven't been published yet, this is what's been announced so far.
Tourism and farming groups are already asking why a backpacker would take on regional work without any certainty of getting another year. If fewer do, that's a supply problem for your season, not just theirs.
If your regional workforce plan leans on backpacker labour, it's worth talking through what else is available. Get in touch here: https://prmigration.pulse.ly/kmlmjt3k3l
