Psychological safety isn't built through policy. It's built or destroyed through everyday language.

Here are 3 phrases that do serious damage:

❌ 'We've already tried that.' → Shuts down ideas before they're fully formed.

Try: 'What would need to be different this time for it to work?'

❌ 'I shouldn't have to tell you this.' → Shame disguised as feedback.

Try: 'Let me clarify what I'm looking for - I should have been clearer earlier.'

❌ 'Don't bring me problems, bring me solutions.' → Makes people hide issues until they're crises.

Try: 'I want to hear about this early - what's your sense of what's happening?'

Language shapes culture. Every conversation is a vote for the kind of team you're building.

Save this. Share it. Use it.

Comment which phrase you've heard most. And follow for more tools from Dale Carnegie Queensland.

The conversation you keep rehearsing in your head? It's time to learn how to actually have it.

Every leader has one. The conversation they've been putting off for weeks - maybe months. With the underperforming team member they genuinely like. With the colleague who keeps undermining collaboration. With the leader above them whose expectations keep shifting.

Avoided conversations have a cost that compounds quietly - in eroded trust, unresolved tension, and performance that never quite reaches its potential.

Our Difficult Conversations Workshop returns on Tuesday 13 October at 12pm AEST.

In one focused online hour, you'll learn to:

✔ Approach sensitive conversations with genuine confidence

✔ Reduce defensiveness and keep dialogue constructive

✔ Address tension, conflict, and performance early

✔ Turn difficult moments into trust-building opportunities

Register early.

In over 30 years of working with leaders on feedback, I've noticed the most common mistake is almost never about the content.

It's about the delivery.

Feedback that triggers defensiveness, shuts down dialogue, or damages relationships doesn't fail because you were wrong. It fails because the approach didn't create the conditions for the message to be received.

In my experience, the most effective feedback has three things in common:

It's specific - about a behaviour, not a character trait.
It's timely - given close to the moment it's relevant.
It's caring - delivered with genuine investment in the other person's growth.

Specific. Timely. Caring.

Change those three variables and watch what happens to your team's response to feedback.

Which of the three is your current growth edge?

Comment below and tell me. And if you know a manager who's been avoiding a feedback conversation, share this with them.

In 2 hours, we go live with What Got You Here, Won't Get You There! and before we do, I always take a moment to think about the same thing.

Not the content. Not the frameworks.

The people.

Every person about to join that virtual room today is showing up with something real, a challenge they're navigating, a habit they want to shift, a version of themselves they're reaching for.

My job isn't just to deliver information. It's to create the conditions for insight.

And that starts with remembering that every name on the attendee list is a human being who decided, today, that their growth was worth an hour.

Thank you to everyone joining us soon. See you there let's make this hour count.

The real cost of poor leadership is almost never measured but it's always felt.

Organisations are very good at measuring the cost of poor performance in technical roles. A broken process, a missed deadline, these have visible, quantifiable consequences.

But the cost of poor leadership? That's almost always invisible on a spreadsheet and devastating in practice.

Here's what it actually costs:
→ The high performer who quietly decides to leave rather than raise an issue
→ The team that produces its safest work, not its best
→ The conflict that festers for months, poisoning collaboration
→ The talented person who stops raising their hand — and eventually stops caring
→ The culture that becomes about self-protection rather than performance

None of these appear as a line item. But all of them compound into measurable losses in retention, productivity, and culture.

Investing in leadership capability is not a nice-to-have. It's cost prevention at the highest level.

I've used this principle in every sales and leadership training I've ever run and I've never seen it fail.

The leader who walks into a room genuinely curious about the people in it who asks real questions and actually listens to the answers builds more trust in five minutes than the most polished presenter builds in an hour.

Because people feel the difference between being engaged and being processed.

Interest before influence. Understanding before action. Connection before direction.

This is the foundation of the Dale Carnegie approach and it's as relevant in a team meeting today as it was when Dale Carnegie first wrote it.

Who could you approach with more genuine curiosity this week?

Follow our page for more insights. Share this with someone in your team or network.

I hear this in some form from leaders across Queensland every single time.

And I understand it. For many, especially those with more traditional management styles expressing recognition doesn't come naturally. They assume the team knows.

They don't.

In the absence of explicit, specific recognition, people fill the silence with their own narratives. And those narratives are almost never 'my leader thinks I'm doing a great job.' They're 'I must be doing something wrong' or 'maybe I'm not valued here.'

Recognition is not a luxury. It is a retention strategy, a performance tool, and a fundamental human need.

Specific. Timely. Genuine. That's all it takes.

When did you last recognise someone on your team by name, for something specific?

The habits that got you promoted? They might be the same ones holding you back.

It's the paradox nobody warns you about: the behaviours that made you successful "here" are rarely the ones that'll get you "there."

Gallup's research is blunt about it - individual performance drives team performance, and team performance drives the organisation. So if you're not evolving, neither is your team.

In this FREE 60-minute Live Online workshop, we're unpacking:
🔹 The Paradox of Success - 4 roadblocks to change
🔹 Pushing comfort zones (without the cringe)
🔹 The power of feedback - the good, the bad, the necessary
🔹 The 5 Drivers of Success
