Psychological safety isn't built through policy. It's built or destroyed through everyday language.
Here are 3 phrases that do serious damage:
❌ 'We've already tried that.' → Shuts down ideas before they're fully formed.
Try: 'What would need to be different this time for it to work?'
❌ 'I shouldn't have to tell you this.' → Shame disguised as feedback.
Try: 'Let me clarify what I'm looking for - I should have been clearer earlier.'
❌ 'Don't bring me problems, bring me solutions.' → Makes people hide issues until they're crises.
Try: 'I want to hear about this early - what's your sense of what's happening?'
Language shapes culture. Every conversation is a vote for the kind of team you're building.
