"My return is too simple to bother with an accountant." We hear this every July, and it is almost always the return with the most missed deductions.
The assumption is understandable. One employer, PAYG income, a pre-filled myTax screen that looks complete. If the numbers already appear, what is there for a Registered Tax Agent to find?
The answer sits in what pre-fill does not show. ATO pre-fill captures what employers, banks and government agencies report. It does not capture work-from-home hours, tools, protective clothing, laundry of compulsory uniforms, professional development, union and association fees, or the home internet portion used for work. myTax does not prompt for these by occupation, and it does not test whether your records meet the ATO's substantiation rules.
This is what the Deduction Scan stage of our Before-Lodgement Method is built to surface. Before a return moves to the Error and Risk Check or the final Compliance Lock, a Registered Tax Agent reviews your occupation, your working arrangements and your records against the deduction categories the ATO accepts for your role. Nurses, tradies, teachers, support workers and rideshare drivers all have distinct claim profiles. A PAYG payment summary tells us almost nothing about which apply to you.
A simple income picture is not the same as a simple deduction picture. The first is what the ATO already knows. The second is what you are entitled to claim, and it is rarely on the screen in front of you.
If you are preparing to lodge for the 2025β26 financial year from 1 July 2026, have your return reviewed before it reaches the ATO. Keep your records ready and check before lodging.
