Early pathogen identification plays a critical role in antimicrobial stewardship, especially in patients with suspected sepsis.

When clinicians have faster insight into the likely cause of infection, they can move beyond prolonged empirical therapy and make more informed treatment decisions. This supports antimicrobial stewardship efforts and helps protect the effectiveness of existing therapies.

Each year, sepsis affects an estimated 49 million people worldwide including over 20 million children under 5 and nearly 5 million older children and teens.

This life-threatening condition can escalate quickly, but early detection saves lives. At Microbio, we’re committed to developing rapid, accurate diagnostics to help clinicians detect infections faster and act sooner.

Because every life counts.

Today, on World AIDS Day, we acknowledge the ongoing global effort to address HIV and related infectious diseases. Effective diagnostics remain central to that effort. When clinicians have access to fast, accurate results, they can make better decisions for their patients and strengthen public health responses at scale.

At Microbio, our work focuses on providing tools that support early detection of infectious agents. Accessible diagnostics are a key part of improving outcomes for communities everywhere.

Your Sepsis Diagnostics Questions, Answered

Clinicians and partners often ask the same core questions about how sepsis is diagnosed and where molecular testing fits.

Our latest FAQ article brings these answers together in one place. It covers:
• How sepsis is identified in clinical practice
• The role of biomarkers, cultures and molecular methods
• Where InfectID™-BSI fits into the diagnostic pathway
• How faster identification can support antimicrobial stewardship

World AMR Awareness Week runs from 18 to 24 November. It is a global campaign dedicated to improving understanding of antimicrobial resistance and encouraging best practices that help slow the rise and spread of drug-resistant infections.

This year’s theme, “Act Now. Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future”, highlights the need for coordinated action across sectors. AMR is already shaping health outcomes, food systems, environmental stability and economies. It is not a distant challenge. It is a current and growing threat that requires immediate and sustained attention.

At Microbio, we contribute to stewardship efforts by helping clinicians reach targeted therapy sooner. InfectID-BSI identifies 26 pathogens associated with sepsis in three hours. This supports more informed treatment decisions and can reduce the reliance on broad empirical therapy when rapid clarity matters.

AMR cannot be addressed by awareness alone. It relies on better diagnostics, responsible antibiotic use and collaboration across sectors. This week is a reminder of the steps we can take today to protect treatment options for the future.

Our InfectID™-BSI test is designed to accurately identify 26 sepsis-causing pathogens in just 3 hours, providing healthcare providers with the critical time needed to deliver targeted treatments.

In the fight against sepsis, every hour matters ⌛. Quick and precise diagnosis can significantly improve patient outcomes and potentially save lives. By reducing the time to diagnosis, we empower healthcare professionals to make informed decisions, leading to timely interventions and better care for patients facing this life-threatening condition.

When the Standard of Care cannot identify fastidious or suppressed pathogens, timely and targeted treatment is delayed. InfectID™-BSI changes that, delivering rapid and reliable pathogen identification in just three hours.

🔍 Why it matters:
- Improves accuracy for patients with prior antimicrobial therapy.
- Enhances detection of hard-to-culture pathogens.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) continues to accelerate worldwide, with the latest WHO report revealing that one in six bacterial infections in 2023 was resistant to antibiotic treatment. Gram-negative bacteria, such as E. coli and K. pneumoniae, are now showing resistance rates exceeding 40% globally.

These pathogens are among the leading causes of bloodstream infections that can progress to sepsis, where rapid identification is critical.

At Microbio, our InfectID™-BSI test identifies 26 pathogens associated with bloodstream infections, including E. coli and K. pneumoniae, within three hours. This provides clinicians with the information needed to prescribe targeted antibiotics.

As AMR continues to rise, especially in regions with limited diagnostic capacity, rapid molecular tests like InfectID™-BSI are essential tools to help clinicians act fast, preserve treatment options, and improve patient outcomes.

One in six laboratory-confirmed bacterial infections causing common infections in people worldwide in 2023 were resistant to antibiotic treatments, according to a new World Health Organization (WHO) report launched today.
