LOOK: SPNEC starts construction of ‘biggest solar project in Southeast Asia’

Newly-listed Solar Philippines Nueva Ecija Corporation (SPNEC) over the weekend said it has started the construction of what it envisions to be the biggest solar project in the Southeast Asian region.

According to SPNEC, the project will have a full capacity of 500 megawatts (MW), located in the firm’s property in Peñaranda, Nueva Ecija, which it has been developing in the last five years.

Funded by proceeds from its P2.7-billion initial public offering, the first 50 megawatts are targeted to start delivering power to the grid by the end of 2022, driving profitability for the firm.

SPNEC listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange earlier this month, becoming the first pure-play solar company to make its public debut so far in the country.

A lot of people from Manila really have no idea of the boom going on just 80km away. There is a green family paradise on your doorstep, with lower living costs, but an enormous number of high-paying office jobs.

Lots of things are cheaper in the Philippines but infrastructure is not.

Power costs a bit more than Australia.
In Mobile Broadband Philippnes ranks 60th cheapest in the world for cost (Australia is 16th).

Average broadband speed is only 6MBit in Philippines (ranking 97th against Australia’s 50th position and 16mbit average).

Consequently internet is 3-8 times the price of Australia, and reliability is also a lot lower.

If you are intending to establish an office in The Philippines, a single internet and power source is insufficient. You will need diesel generator back up for power, and 2-3 internet connections to avoid outages.

Looking to establish a business or team The Philippines? Manila is a mega city that is worthy of consideration. However, there may be no need to settle for congested Manila when a world-class business district, dual international airport, and healthy population awaits just 70km north.

Clark and Pampanga is an impressive part of the Philippines in which to invest.

Interesting facts around banking and employee tax in The Philippines...

Only 23% of Filipinos have a bank account.

Only 4% have done online payments.

Just under half of the adult population has some savings (at least pre-COVID), but two thirds of those store those savings at home.

Meanwhile only 18% of adults have any form of insurance.

When you set up a company in The Philippines, although you’ll probably be hiring skilled and university educated staff, you still need to provide more support than you might expect, on issues around taxation and banking.

Most white-collar employers provide the bank account for every new staff member, and by law the employer is responsible for submitting each employees tax return, along with ensuring that the tax paid is correct, regardless of how many employers they had during the year.

This is particularly challenging when the lack of mass auditing means that a large number of companies are taxing and remitting tax to the BIR at incorrect levels.

The last employer holding the bag at 31st of December has to fix the screw ups of the previous employers.
