Small Business Association of Australia

Small Business Association of Australia The voice of the small business owner. We are supported by both small and big businesses, government and other key organisations.

The Small Business Association of Australia (SBAA) is an active organisation that specialises in supporting and advocating for the SMEs (small and medium enterprises) sector. We understand SMEs are the lifeblood of the Australian economy and play a vital role in Australia's future growth and prosperity. Yet SMEs are grossly undervalued or recognised for their contribution to the economy and face a

n uphill battle for growth and sustainability. SBAA is dedicated to getting a better deal for SMEs and helping businesses connect, grow and prosper in the market place. Our success is largely due to our modern ideas and willingness to work with all key players concerning small business policy. We are excited to announce the launch of the SBAA Think Tank focusing on research, education, policy and practice in the field of small to medium enterprises. If you want to make a change for small business, this is where it starts. SBAA is committed to getting a better deal for SMEs and to do so it needs the backing of small business owners and key stakeholders as members to help it drive that change. By becoming a member, you will also be supporting our work in formulating new ideas and initiatives for consideration by governments for the benefit of small businesses. The Small Business Association of Australia thanks Edward Lin, CEO, Australia Taiwan Culture Foundation for inviting our Founder & CEO Anne Nalder to the Australia-Taiwan Relations forum 2026 titled Shared Responsibility: Security Resilience, and Regional Stability held at Queensland Parliament House.

Guests were impressed with the presentation by Major-General (Ret’d) Michael Barry Ryan AM followed by a panel discussion. This session was moderated by Professor Caitlan Byrne AM, FAIIA, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Business) Griffith University. The Hon Shayne Neumann MP, Chair, Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade, Warwick Penrose CEO, EPE Group and Major General (Ret’d) Michael Barry made up the exception panel.

The conversation covered the Middle East War, Ukraine and Trade and why relationships with other countries are vital. In addition, the conversation touched on what Australia should be undertaking.

Anne Nalder concluded that Major General (Ret’d) Micheal Ryan AM and Warwick Penrose have exceptional CVs including military background and experience and whose advice we would be wise to take note of.

Wishing you a Happy Easter and whatever your religion, pray for Peace in the Middle East

Our Founder and CEO Anne Nalder was recently interviewed on Sunrise regarding the fuel crisis in Australia.

Her message was that small businesses need clear direction from federal and state governments to make informed decisions during these uncertain times. They're already dealing with the high cost of doing business, high inflation and rising interest rates. Now the Middle East conflict is set to add further pressure, affecting fuel supply, fertilisers essential for our food production, plastics, packaging and more.

We're writing to the federal government and opposition with recommendations that must be acted on now, not next week, to help prevent rising unemployment and small business closures. Even if the conflict ended today, significant damage to global refining capacity will take time to repair and restore.

It is time to work together, and it starts with clear leadership from government.

Together with the tens of thousands I was fortunate to attend the Edinburgh Military Tattoo's last show. The weather had been beautiful however, during the four days of the show, Brisbane put on wet weather. The strange thing was that the rain kept away during the nightly performances. Words fail me to describe the event other than it will leave a lifetime of memories of pageantry, various genres of music and entertainment from 13 countries with 1,000 performers. The Tattoo began in 1950 on the Edinburgh Castle Esplande as an annual post-WW11 celebration of military music, Highland dancing and internatinal culture, with this years theme "The Heroes Who Made Us".
Next stop is New Zealand.
Congratulations on the show continuing for 75 years.
How many can claim such a record?

Although the day was wet, it was good to catch up with my colleagues over lunch at The Coffee Commune. Special guest speaker was the Brisbane Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner who spoke about opportunties for small business owners for the upcoming 2032 Games. Thank you to my beautiful group Mariam Elliott, Janet Mhindurwa, Noel Currie, April Liu, Peter Barker and Dr Cathryn Lloyd for joining me and allowing us all to catch up. Thank you Philip Di Bella and Shari Wilding for organising an enjoyable business lunch with great food and drinks and the opportunity to network.
