This is a polariscope, a small but powerful gemmology tool that shows how light travels through a gemstone.

When viewed through it, some gems stay dark through the full 360° rotation, while others shift between light and dark as they turn. This simple test helps reveal whether a stone is singly or doubly refractive — a key step in gemstone identification.
