Is radiometric dating used for:

a) Finding the love of your life
b) Dating ancient materials

The answer is…b! Radiometric dating has helped scientists establish the age of ancient rocks, fossils and wooden artefacts. It has also been used to determine the age of our own planet, which is estimated to be 4.6 billion years old!

So how does this technique work?

Scientists can calculate how old something is by measuring its radioactivity. For example, carbon-14 is used by archaeologists to measure how old fossils are. Scientists can figure this out using carbon-14s ‘half-life’. ‘Half-life’ is the amount of time it takes an atom to release half of its radioactivity. Scientists can find out how long ago something first existed by measuring the remaining carbon-14.

Now, if only science could work out the perfect algorithm for dating apps!
