KMSB - Kimberley Marine Support Base

KMSB - Kimberley Marine Support Base Optimising marine logistics in the North West. Integrated diesel bunkering delivers up to 200,000 litres per hour.

Kimberley Marine Support Base (KMSB) has developed a modern marine logistics facility within the Port of Broome, purpose-built to support the mining, energy, cargo, agriculture, and cruise sectors. Strategically positioned to serve vessels operating across the Kimberley and Pilbara regions, KMSB offers a robust and flexible logistics solution. At the heart of the facility is a state-of-the-art flo

ating wharf, engineered to operate 24/7 despite Broomeโ€™s extreme tidal variations. The 11,500+ tonne, 9,250 square metre structure features a 255-metre berth line, northern and southern dolphins, a 400-metre bi-directional causeway, and an 85-metre linkspan bridge. KMSB is equipped for high-load operations, including a high-capacity mobile harbour crane for cargo, subsea equipment, and modules. The facility also includes over 20 hectares of landside capability, progressively coming online to support just-in-time staging and broader project mobilisation. Designed to handle a wide array of cargo formats - containerised freight, bulk and break-bulk cargo, construction modules, critical minerals, and roll-on/roll-off vessels, KMSB also accommodates oversized components such as wind turbine blades, solar systems, and commercial battery imports for the renewable energy sector. Following the recent acquisition of land at Lumsden Point in Port Hedland, KMSBโ€™s dual-port approach enables operators to manage logistics across Western Australiaโ€™s resources corridor, offering integrated services across key locations. With proximity to Asian trade routes and a skilled local workforce, KMSB serves as a logistics base for both regional and international operations. The new facility officially opened on Friday, 12 September 2025.

It's great to see the Port of Broome back to full operations following the conclusion of protected industrial action.

Last week, Terminal 2 was supporting critical vessel calls and helping clear the backlog of essential marine activity at the port. With operations now fully resumed, our team is continuing to work through the schedule and support customers as normal.

โš“Peak vessel season is well underway in the Port of Broome, with a busy weekend across cruise, livestock, bulk cargo and marine services.

At KMSB Terminal 2, Saturday saw two cruise vessels berthed together, with passenger movements, vessel servicing and fuel bunkering carried out. With a full day in port, passengers moved through Broome on tours and through local operators, cafes and restaurants.

On Sunday, the livestock vessel Gelbray Express (135m LOA) loaded over 3,200 head of cattle and sailed. Soon after, the bulk carrier MV Bao Xiang Ling (190m LOA) came alongside and remains berthed, working through a multi-day cargo load ahead of departure for China.

Four vessels, three industries, one berth pocket at Terminal 2, working alongside other vessel movements across the port over the same weekend. With demand increasing across multiple sectors, additional berth capacity is providing greater flexibility for vessel scheduling and port operations.

On International Day of the Seafarer, we recognise the men and women who operate vessels in all conditions, often far from home, to support global trade and supply chains.

Whether delivering cargo, supporting offshore operations, transporting livestock, welcoming crise passengers or servicing remote communities, seafarers are at the centre of the maritime industry.

Thank you to the crews who visit our facility and to seafarers around the world for the work you do every day.

Today, the first vessel bunkered via the new fuel pipeline at KMSB Terminal 2 in Broome, taking on 150 tonnes of fuel at 200mยณ per hour (3,333 LPM).

Rated among the highest-flow marine bunkering systems in WA, the pipeline strengthens KMSB's ability to support cruise, offshore and commercial vessels calling the Kimberley. Backed by regional fuel storage and a supply chain built to scale, it supports increased marine activity as demand grows.

โ›ด๏ธโš“๏ธOver the Easter weekend, KMSB Terminal 2 welcomed Crown Princess for her first overnight stay in Broome.

The visit ran smoothly from arrival through to departure, supported by strong coordination across teams. The extended stay gave passengers time to explore and enjoy the unique experiences Broome and the Kimberley are known for.

While the benefits were clearly felt across town over the Easter period, the bigger opportunity lies in what this means going forward, giving cruise operators and local businesses greater certainty when planning future visits to Broome.

This first overnight stay shows how reliable access and modern port infrastructure can support ongoing activity for Broome and the wider Kimberley.
