Come play with ideas about how the future happens!

We all have assumptions about how the future happens. And whether you spend time thinking about them or not, every day they quietly shape the choices you make.

Curious what yours might look like?

Join me online this Friday for a lunchtime session to play the P***k Game (courtesy of Peter Hayward).

If you're new to futures and foresight, welcome! This session is a great first taster.

If you've caught the foresight bug and keen to learn more, come along! You'll enjoy yourself and meet other futures folk who are attending.

How does the future look from where you're standing?

This session is a great into to futures and foresight, and is suitable for anyone curious about the stories we tell ourselves about what the future might be.

"Language has always been changeable and adaptive. We lose words we don’t need anymore and invent the ones we need. We don’t need a worldview of Earth beings as objects anymore. That thinking has led us to the precipice of climate chaos and mass extinction. We need a new language that reflects the life-affirming world we want. A new language, with its roots in an ancient way of thinking...

“Ki” to signify a being of the living Earth. Not “he” or “she,” but “ki.” So that when we speak of Sugar Maple, we say, “Oh that beautiful tree, ki is giving us sap again this spring.” And we’ll need a plural pronoun, too, for those Earth beings. Let’s make that new pronoun “kin.” So we can now refer to birds and trees not as things, but as our earthly relatives. On a crisp October morning we can look up at the geese and say, “Look, kin are flying south for the winter. Come back soon.”"

Calling the natural world “it” absolves us of moral responsibility and opens the door to exploitation. Here's what we can say instead.http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2015/02/housing-first-solution-to-homelessness-utah

"[Maarten Rijninks] now views [true prices] as a way to reverse a destructive status quo so pervasive that we no longer see it as strange. “If you go nowadays to buy something in a regular supermarket, it will always be cheaper than the product in my shop, which is organically grown and more expensive,” Rijninks told me. But this cheapness is an illusion: it’s made possible only if you ignore the true costs of goods. “If you incorporate the true prices, my product will be cheaper, too,” Rijninks said. Since his shop adopted the system, he told me, business had increased by about five per cent; many patrons say that they like it. “The problem is that customers don’t have the tools to lower their social and environmental impact,” he said. “But they are willing to do it.”"

True Price, a Dutch nonprofit, aims to help us grasp the real costs of consumption.

I'm at my best when I can facilitate feel-good sessions about hard topics. This morning I had the pleasure of spending time with a highly engaged group discussing ways to understand change and how we can respond and react to it.

There's so much I love about facilitating: watching people have aha moments, sharing tools that help them see in new ways, and hearing their feedback about the experience.

I have a few windows left for facilitation in May and June. If you have a program you'd like facilitated in a warm and open way, or you'd like content designed to help you have better conversations about the futures you are headed towards, the futures you want to create, and what you can about it - book an intro call to explore how we can work together.

SO much fun to be back working with LEGO! On Monday night we told all sorts of wild stories about the futures - preposterous, dystopic, absurd, and preferred. Watch this space - details of the next session at Laneway Learning Melbourne coming soon!

Once you start to see how your actions play a part in creating your present, you are free to choose other paths to shape a future you want to live in.

I'm designing a project that brings together foresight, systemic change principles, and community building to help Australians live more sustainably, starting where they are, using what they've got, and doing what they can. Happy Australian Overshoot Day! Wait what?

If the whole world lived like Australians do, then today is the day we would use the last of the ecological resources and services the Earth can regenerate in 2022. Heck, I'm still not consistently writing 2022 when I write the date.

The (kinda) good news is that Australia's overshoot day is much sooner than Earth Overshoot Day. In 2021, that fell on July 29. The silver lining here is that Australians have a lot of room to move to reduce our consumption, and nudge our national overshoot day later in the year.

I'm working on a project to use foresight, systems change principles, and community building to help Australians live more sustainably personally, professionally, and within their communities. Sound like your kinda jam? Take 5 minutes to learn more, shape the idea, and join the waitlist.

Building stories about the Future with LEGO is back, and boy I cannot wait!

I'll be joining the good folk at Laneway Learning Melbourne to give you a hands on intro to imagining possible and preposterous futures using LEGO. It's my favourite type of foresight workshop - fun, hands on, and a little bit ridiculous.
