If something's important, most of us start adding instructions to the AI. Do it this way. Check this. Don't make that mistake again. Eventually you've explained nearly every step.

That was the right call with earlier models. With the current ones you can end up limiting the answer to the approach you already had in mind, which is a problem when you're asking for expertise you don't have.

Think about how you'd brief an accountant. You explain the situation, hand over the information, tell them what you need. You don't explain how to do the accounting.

Same idea. Give it the objective, the background, the real constraints, and be clear about what a good result looks like. Then leave some room for judgment, and check the work when it comes back.

You've probably noticed software sprouting AI buttons this year. Another chatbot, another prompt box, another "Ask AI".

The best AI features usually don't look like AI features. On an online store, AI can make the search understand what someone meant and connect it to the words your listings actually use. Same search box, better results. The alternative is a shopping assistant sitting next to that search box, and now your customer has a whole second interface to work out.

We built YourMorning.ai on the quiet version. Paste in an RSS feed URL and that's the whole ask: the categorising, the description, the keywords and a confidence check all happen behind it. Nobody gets handed a form.

There are times AI should absolutely be visible. Since EU AI Act Article 50 kicked in on 2 August, anything talking to a person has to say it's an AI. But the sorting, searching and routing should usually stay quiet.

You get a website. Then you add a booking plugin, because customers want to book. Then a customer login, because they want to see their bookings. Then a workflow, because someone has to action them. Then document delivery. Then a bit of custom code to make two plugins talk to each other.

Every one of those was a reasonable call at the time. But you are now running your business off your marketing website, and the two jobs want opposite things. Your marketing site needs to change whenever your positioning does, and it needs to be quick — Google's own research put the jump in bounce rate at 32% when a page goes from loading in one second to three. Your operational system needs to sit still and work while your staff and customers depend on it every day.

Put the public website on your root domain and the application on a subdomain. They can still talk to each other. The form on your website starts the process, the app owns everything that happens after.

New video explains how to tell which is which, and when a plugin is genuinely still fine.

We run a free directory for Australian tradies called My Local Trade, and a few weeks back more than 20 businesses got submitted to it in a very short window.

Nothing looked wrong at first. Real businesses, working websites. Then we noticed every single submission used a Gmail address that wasn't published anywhere on the business's own site — and the company that built all those websites was the one doing the submitting.

The problem with that is what happens after we approve. The contact address on the listing is the one a customer uses, so enquiries meant for the tradie would have gone somewhere else entirely.

Doing those checks by hand is slow, so we built some API tools and handed the moderation queue to an AI agent, along with a set of rules for what it's allowed to decide. It runs twice a weekday now.

Most of the online stores we build run on WooCommerce, and the reason isn't that it's free.

It isn't, really. There's no platform fee on each order, but the hosting, updates, backups and security still need looking after. Shopify does more of that for you and charges monthly for it. Neither one makes the work go away — the costs just sit in different places.

What we like is that the shop lives in the same site as everything else. Same editor, same domain, so your product pages and your articles and your service pages aren't in a different system to your checkout. And when a business needs something specific, there's room to build it rather than working around what the platform allows.

Google searches ended without a click 68% of the time in the US so far this year. If your content plan was to answer a question and rank for it, that click was the whole point, and it's the bit that's gone.

Worth being clearer about what each piece adds. We use three categories: the advice that already exists and shows you know the ground, the judgement about what a particular business should do, and the genuinely new stuff you only get by testing something and publishing what happened.

That last one is the only kind AI can't produce, because the numbers don't exist until you run the test.

New video works through all three using website inquiry forms as the example.

WordPress runs about 41% of all websites on the internet, which makes it both the obvious choice and the most attacked platform on the web. Those two facts are related, and neither one tells you whether your site is safe.

We put together a video on what WordPress actually is — the block editor, what plugins do to a site, why we steer clear of page builders, and the maintenance nobody quotes for. It is free to download. Hosting, updates, backups and security are not.

Worth a watch if you have been quoted for a WordPress site and want to know what you are buying.

Laravel is a framework for building web applications in PHP. It handles the technical foundations that nearly every application needs, so the developers building yours can start on the part that is actually specific to your business.

The foundations Laravel covers: requests, responses, validation, database access, authentication, permissions, security, email, file storage and background jobs. The parts it deliberately leaves alone: your interface, and the business logic behind your features.

Then there's the package ecosystem, which works a lot like plugins. User login and password resets, two-factor authentication, social login, API authentication, payments and subscriptions, search, monitoring, queue management. Most of these are first-party packages with names you can look up. Cashier handles billing, Socialite handles social login, Scout handles search, Horizon handles queues.

Why any of that matters commercially: Laravel is open source under the MIT licence, so the code can be read, contributed to and improved by anyone using it, rather than sitting inside a system one company controls. A major version ships every year, each release gets 18 months of bug fixes and two years of security fixes, and bugs get found by developers using it everywhere rather than by whoever happens to be free that week.

If you've looked at your server logs lately you've probably seen names like GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Applebot turning up.

They're not all doing the same job. Some are indexing your site so it shows up in AI search. Some are fetching a page because someone asked a chatbot a question about you. Some are collecting content that may be used to train the next model. Same company, often, but different crawlers with different names.

That matters because robots.txt lets you answer them one at a time. You can let ChatGPT find your site and still tell GPTBot not to take your content for training. Google gives you Google-Extended for the same reason, and Google's documentation is clear that using it doesn't affect your Google Search rankings at all.

The new video breaks down what each crawler actually does and shows the rules to put in your robots.txt file.
