The Gambling Community Benefit Fund is open again

This is only the second GCBF round this year, after the launch of the new online grants portal.

Grants of up to $35,000 are available for not-for-profit community groups and charities right across Queensland - equipment, community support activities, local events and facility improvements.

Applications close Monday 28 September 2026.

The new portal is better:
Simpler application questions
Clearer guidance and prompts
System alerts that flag missing information before you submit (nice!)

One warning. The Department is expecting strong interest, so the portal may be slow. Don't leave it to the last week!

We've won a lot of these for clubs and charities over the years, and the pattern is always the same. The applications that get up are the ones that clearly explain the project, show a tangible benefit to the community, back the costs with realistic quotes, and cover how it'll be maintained into the future.

And if you're applying for works on land or buildings you don't own, get your tenure and approvals sorted before you start.

Applications are open for the 2026 NAB Foundation Community Grants. Up to $25,000, closing Monday 14 September.

Quick note on eligibility, because this one trips people up. You do not need to be a registered charity. Any organisation with an ABN and a charitable purpose can apply, including many not-for-profits, social enterprises, schools and local government projects.

The harder test is the project. It has to connect to preparing for, or recovering from, bushfires, floods, cyclones or storms. NAB also gives priority to organisations under $3 million in income that get less than 40% of their funding from government. A community group with a real resilience story will do well here. A group trying to bend a general project to fit the guidelines will not.

Two weeks left for regional Queensland tourism operators.

Round 2 of the Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund closes 9 September. It's $5M from the Queensland Government for new and enhanced tourism infrastructure and experiences outside South-East Queensland, in the lead-up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympics and Paralympics.

Because Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast are all excluded, this one is regional-only. If you're in Winton, Hughenden, Longreach, Cairns, Cooktown, Charters Towers, Emerald or out on the Capricorn Coast, you're up against other regional operators.

What it funds: eco-lodges and glamping, attractions celebrating Indigenous heritage, culinary and agri-tourism, dark-sky experiences, and accessibility upgrades.

The basics:
📌 Up to $300,000 per project, no co-contribution needed
📌 Established operators (12+ months) and new or interstate operators setting up in Queensland
📌 Must be in an eligible regional LGA
📌 Construction-ready within 3 months of approval
📌 Closes 9 September, decisions December

This is the face of a volunteer treasurer three hours into a $5,000 grant application.

Three quotes. A certificate of currency. Two letters of support. A committee resolution. A budget with the GST done properly. Two 500-word essays. And an acquittal waiting at the end that nobody warned them about.

I'm not against small grants. I've seen $5,000 buy a defibrillator, get a dozen volunteers coaching accredited, or put up a shade sail that means junior training does not get cancelled in February. Real outcomes.

But the paperwork for $5,000 is often identical to the paperwork for $75,000. Same portal, same attachments, same reporting. And the people carrying it are usually doing the books after their own workday, or running the canteen roster on the weekend.

To the funders: a short form for anything under $10,000 would change everything. The groups most worth funding are usually the ones with the least capacity to prove it.

Spent an afternoon last week at Thriving Through Change, run by Coast Council's economic development team, and it was one of the better uses of an afternoon I've had this year.

For a grant writer, the value is always who is in the room. If you run a business on this Coast and you are not plugged into the support around you - networking groups, financial counselling, export advice, chambers, industry associations across food, manufacturing, screen, tourism and tech - you are working harder than you need to. It is all sitting there.

I've worked with a lot of these groups over the years, and the contacts that came out of them have mattered in ways I could never have predicted. A chat at an event like this becomes a letter of support two years later. A board member you met over coffee becomes the reason a client's application has the evidence it needs. That is not networking for its own sake. It is how outcomes get built.

Effie Zahos gave a great keynote - clear, simple financial advice, no jargon. I've already ordered her book. Tony Kelly brought real substance to the panel alongside Karmin Kenny, Rob Rand and Roz White, and Mayor Rosanna Natoli opened the event.

I spent Saturday judging Generation Innovation Pitch Day, and I'm still thinking about it.

Ten young entrepreneurs, aged 14 to 21, pitching businesses they've actually built. Drones that inspect bridges. Compostable materials taking on silica gel. A barber who got sick of his booking system and wrote his own. A game that teaches kids about money.

Five of us on the judging panel had one job - pick three to go through to the final. It was the hardest part of the day by a long way.

Each of them pitched for ten minutes, then sat through three rounds of questions. I was asking about marketing and customers, which is where you find out fast whether someone has really talked to the people they're building for. These ones had. Some of them have more commercial sense at 16 than people I've met with decades on them.

Congratulations Julia, Christian and Zeke. And to the seven who didn't go through, you stood up and answered for your work in front of a room full of adults. That is not a small thing.

Thanks to Craig Chesterman for chairing, to my fellow judges Jaymee, Rudy and Vicky, and to Shane and the Generation Innovation team who kept the whole day running when the tech didn't want to.

I do the monthly grant searches for Generation Innovation, and judged the final phase last year. Getting asked back is one of the better things about the work.

These students are the reason I'm optimistic about this place.

GRANT ALERT - Stockland Aura Community Grants

Applications are open now and close at 5pm on Monday 31 August 2026, so there is just over a fortnight left.

Grants range from $1,000 up to $50,000 across three tiers, for not-for-profits, community groups, sporting clubs, charities and social enterprises. One-off events are capped at $15,000, and unincorporated groups can apply for up to $5,000.

The 2026 round is focused on community-led initiatives, youth participation, health and wellbeing, local identity, sustainability and First Nations partnerships. Your project needs to address at least three of the four Community Benefit Fund objectives - Distinctive, Talented, Happy and Healthy, and Green.

One thing to check first: your organisation does not have to be based in the catchment, but the project outcome does. That covers Caloundra, Kings Beach, Moffat Beach, Shelley Beach, Dicky Beach, Currimundi, Golden Beach, the Aura suburbs including Baringa, Nirimba, Banya and Gagalba, Bells Reach, Bellvista, Glenview, Mooloolah Valley, Landsborough, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Beerburrum.

The last round shared almost $500,000 across 21 local organisations, and the program has now put close to $2 million back into the region.

Applications that show real collaboration, a clear community need and lasting benefit beyond a one-off event tend to do best. Feel free to contact me if you would like a hand pulling yours together.

GRANT ALERT - Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund

Applications close Wednesday 9 September 2026.

This is one we are excited about. We wrote RTIF applications across a wide range of categories in the last round, and saw just how strong the projects coming out of regional Queensland are.

Up to $300,000 per project this round (more than last time), with no co-contribution required - though anything above the grant amount is yours to cover. Decisions are announced in December.

In the lead up to Brisbane 2032, RTIF is funding new and enhanced tourism infrastructure and experiences across regional Queensland - projects that lift visitor numbers and spend, encourage longer stays, and spread visitors further across the regions.

Open to regional Queensland tourism operators.

Two to watch: your project cannot have already started (though separate stages can be funded), and you must own any asset the funding creates or buys.

There is time to build a strong case before 9 September, but not time to waste. Feel free to contact me if you would like to talk it through.

GRANT ALERT for Sunshine Coast community groups

Council's Major Grants round opens 24 August and closes 6 October 2026.

Up to $15,000 for one-off projects, events and activities, or up to $30,000 for infrastructure through the Community Facilities category.

You can apply under Community Development, Community Facilities, Creative Development, Cultural Heritage, Economic Development, or Sport and Recreation - but only one application per organisation per round, so pick your category carefully.

A few things worth knowing before you start:
Co-funding kicks in above $7,500, and volunteer hours can count towards part of it
You will need quotes for anything over $500
Your project cannot have already started

And if you're not on the Sunshine Coast, don't tune out. Most Queensland councils run similar community grant rounds around this time of year, with much the same categories and rules. Now is a good time to check your own council's grants page.

GRANT ALERT - NSW sporting clubs.

Up to $3,000 to put a defibrillator on your clubhouse wall. NSW Office of Sport, Local Sport Defibrillator Grant Program 2026/27.

Closes 7 October - or sooner if the $500,000 runs out. First in, first served.

You need to be a NFP NSW sport or active recreation club, in an eligible SEIFA postcode (or able to show financial hardship), with $5m public liability.

Before grant writing I was a physio for decades - a lot of it on the sideline with community clubs, some of it in a cardiac hospital. I have seen both ends of a sudden cardiac event. A defib on the wall is one of the very few things that changes how that day ends.

Get it in this week, not next. Happy to answer a quick question if you are working out whether you fit.
