National Biosecurity Week | Community Biosecurity in Action

During National Biosecurity Week, at LBG we are celebrating the community members working diligently to manage pests on their properties AND those who take the time to learn about established and emerging biosecurity threats and become another set of informed eyes across our region.

Biosecurity is a shared responsibility, and our recent DPIRD-led Polyphagous Shot-hole Borer (PSHB) Workshop in Dardanup provided a wonderful example of what community participation in biosecurity can look like.
We were so glad to see such strong community interest, with local residents giving up part of their Saturday to learn more about this tiny but highly destructive invasive pest and, importantly, how they can play a proactive role in helping to protect our local trees.

With PSHB not currently detected in our region, knowing what to look for and reporting anything suspicious can make a real difference. Workshop participants heard directly from DPIRD experts about signs of PSHB infestation, preferred and susceptible host trees, how to correctly collect samples and what to do if PSHB is suspected. They also had the opportunity to examine infested wood and PSHB specimens before heading outside for a practical demonstration of how to inspect trees and collect samples.

This is community biosecurity in action: people taking an interest, becoming informed, knowing what to look for and being prepared to report something unusual.

It’s National Biosecurity Week (24–30 August 2026), which is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of Australia’s biosecurity system and the role we can all play in protecting it.

Biosecurity is a shared responsibility. We all have a role to play.

Biosecurity helps protect our native plants and wildlife, biodiversity, environment, agriculture, public health, economy and the lifestyles we value.

At LBG, we celebrate and value the individual and collective efforts being made across our communities to help protect our beautiful and unique region from biosecurity risks. We contribute by supporting landholders with guidance, resources and, where applicable, on-ground services, and by collaborating with peer organisations, local governments and State Government agencies to help manage established declared pests, keep watch for emerging threats and share knowledge across our region.

This National Biosecurity Week, we encourage you to consider some simple actions we can each take:

Report unusual sightings - Seen an unusual pest, plant or sign of disease? Report it. Free apps such as DPIRD’s MyPestGuide® Reporter can help identify, monitor and initiate responses to potential threats. Your observation could contribute to the early detection of a new incursion.

"Come Clean, Go Clean" - Clean shoes, clothing, tools and equipment before moving between locations to reduce the risk of carrying seeds, soil, plant material, pests or pathogens with you.

Check and clean vehicles and bikes - After travelling through bushland, rural or agricultural areas, check for and remove soil, seeds and plant material before moving on.

Buy firewood where you burn it! - Source and burn your firewood in the same area; don't risk spreading biosecurity threats to other areas

Dispose of garden waste responsibly - never dump garden clippings or unwanted plants in bushland or reserves. Plant material can spread weeds, pests and diseases into new areas.

Know what you grow - Purchase plants and seeds from reputable sources and know what you are introducing to your garden or property.

Know what to look for and spread the word - Stay informed about established and emerging biosecurity threats and share that knowledge with family, friends and neighbours. Such as knowing how to recognise the signs of Polyphagous Shot-hole Borer! (There's still time to register for our 3 Sept DPIRD-led PSHB workshop in Donnybrook)

We’re all in this together.

Whether managing pests already established in our region or keeping watch for something new, every biosecurity action helps protect what we value today and into the future.

National eradication of this highly destructive, tiny invasive beetle has been determined to no longer be feasible making informed communities more important than ever. PSHB has not yet been detected in our region. Be informed to know what to look for to help protect our trees.
