So fruit set is complete šŸ„‘
and so begins the next phase- the fruit shed!

One of many fruit sheds to come as the trees’ begin their own version of equilibrium.

Unfortunately for us farmers, that equilibrium rarely equates to 50t/ha!
There are many levers that can be managed to optimise fruit retention and this may help to retain an additional 1-5%, but in my experience this work was required awhile ago.

The most important lever that a grower has control over is Irrigation and Nutrition. I actually think irrigation trumps - because if you get it wrong you reduce the potential of your trees root system so that it is unable to take up all that nutrition.

Recently I’ve had conversations around what everyone is referring to ā€œfruit setā€.

Everyone seems to have a different idea of when it is šŸ„‘!
This is my idea - feel free to add in your idea!

Another challenge comes and hits you over the head.

It feels like Problem solving is the name of the game in Ag.
Every. Single. Day.
This is a doozy!

These guys have done so much damage in such a short period- 3 nights!
They are moving between state government owned land and private property.

ā€œThe pig guyā€- tracked one bore that ran for over 10km in one night!

Avocado feeder roots sit right on the surface, so the impact of pigs rooting around under the drip line will have a big impact on the trees’ ability to take up water and nutrient …. Just as we head into flowering.

So the game is on, get the pigs under control AND get the tree health back into shape before they head into flowering and stress themselves out!

I’m in charge of the latter.

The Bee hives have begun their immersion into our orchard! This season is a staggered drop, with competition between the states a factor!

It could be an interesting result, with a continuous renewed amount of bees coming in. šŸ¤žšŸ» šŸ šŸ„‘

In one season Varroa mite has gone from being Victoria/NSW’s problem to our problem!

Last season, in Bundaberg something shifted dramatically in the fight against varroa mite.
After flowering - reports from bee keepers indicated big hive losses.

In just 12 months:

šŸ„‘ Hive costs have doubled $$
šŸ„‘ Wild bees are missing in action
šŸ„‘ competition for pollination services has resulted in additional challenges.

We have all been waiting for this to happen- it’s just a bit surreal to how quickly it’s decimated the wild bees!

Some of the biggest mistakes I see in avocado irrigation are some of the simplest to change.

One key issue I see on my day to day travels- is ground-truthing of soil capacitance probes.

There is so much info on these graphs that we just aren’t maximising, so I decided to do a webinar on just that!

Join my ā€œFreeā€ webinar so we can learn how: -To find the ā€œsweet spotā€
-Identify soil issues
-troubleshoot irrigation problems
All in just 45 mins.

This will be great training for any avocado grower who wants to brush up on their skills and/or any employees who are in charge of irrigation for avos.

So this is why farmers that grow avocados have high stress levels-

I tried to capture the small Unpollinated fruits that fell off 2 smaller trees that I’m monitoring - less than 1m tall!
šŸ„‘
This was in a 24 hr period!
