In my last post, I mentioned that I’m offering introductory talks on mindfulness in my new hometown of Port Hedland.
Some of you might be wondering, what does mindfulness even mean?
I don't blame you if you’re a bit unsure about it. Mindfulness has become a “buzz” word recently and these days it’s getting used for just about anything and everything.
There’s mindfulness colouring-in books, the common myth that mindfulness is all about making your mind "go blank" and then recently, I saw something called goat meditation?!
And while I have worked on farms and loved goats, the type of mindfulness I talk about and train people in isn’t actually any of these and definitely doesn’t involve any goats (sorry if you were hoping for that at my Hedland events!)…
The mindfulness I teach and practice is evidence-based form of mindfulness that is consistent with the latest neuroscience research. It involves systematically learning a set of skills that you can apply in real life. It’s secular and it’s totally grounded in the body, so it’s not about imagining stuff, colouring-in anything, or hugging any goats.
The reason I focus on this science-based type of mindfulness is because that’s where the evidence is for what works. As someone who is trained in psychology, I’m keen to do stuff that’s proven to be effective. So that’s what you can expect to learn about in my talks – the solid, practical science-based version of mindfulness that has proven to be helpful in real life.
Speaking about the research evidence for the benefits of mindfulness, the personal benefits include reducing stress, improving sleep and enhancing physical and mental health.
This image shows a quick snapshot of the rapid increase in research into mindfulness over recent years, and three of the many benefits people get from the type of mindfulness that I teach.
