The generational divide over housing is wider than ever, with 61 percent of Australians fearing the dream of home ownership is dead for younger Australians.

New research commissioned by 89 Degrees East reveals that renters are most concerned about being locked out of the market.

For more information on the research, contact our Director of Research, Dr. Rebecca Huntley or Glenn Byres, Director of Policy, Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement.

Our Director of Research, Dr Rebecca Huntley, researched the attitudes of younger taxpayers (18-50) to aged care funding and found most were open to older people with means making a higher contribution to the costs of care.

Dr Huntley said younger taxpayers were in the dark about how much of the aged care bill the government picked up, with fewer than one in 10 understanding older Australians with means contributed only about 5% of the total cost of their care in the aged care system.

The study showed seven in 10 believed the main purpose of savings and superannuation was to support yourself in older age, yet we know 80% of people die with the bulk of their superannuation and retirement savings intact (Michael Callaghan, 2020 Retirement Income Review).

Most younger taxpayers believe savings and super are to support yourself in old age rather than hoarding it to pass on to the next generation, a new study reveals.

89 Degrees East is proudly supporting the majority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and voting YES at the Referendum.

YES to Constitutional Recognition. YES to a Voice. YES to a better future.

The Voice started as an idea from First Nations leaders. It has travelled with those leaders from Uluru to every town and every city across our great country.

In the history of our nation, there has never been an issue which has brought more people together. 80% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Over 50,000 volunteers.

And there is no more pressing issue for our nation to grapple with than the need to address the devastating gulf between Indigenous and non-Indigenous outcomes.

· 8 year gap in life expectancy
· Double Infant mortality rate
· Su***de twice as likely

The status quo isn’t working. It’s time Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a say on the policies that impact their lives.

We urge every Australian to join Indigenous leaders to help shift the dial towards a better future by voting YES!

"A referendum is a once- or twice-in-a-lifetime event. Reforming the constitution is hard, necessarily so, but even harder in times of political polarisation and economic and environmental crises, in a media environment rife with mis- and disinformation."

Our Research Director, Dr Rebecca Huntley, reflects on Peter Dutton's declaration to hold a referendum of his own on Indigenous recognition if the voice referendum is unsuccessful.

Read Rebecca's opinion piece in The Guardian on why, whether the October 14 referendum is successful or not, no one will want another one anytime soon.

Mere constitutional ‘recognition’ is unlikely to sway those on the fence. Whether the 14 October vote is successful, no one wants another referendum anytime soon
