Did you know that the old Bangalow A&I Hall is regarded by many in the music business as acoustically superb but it also served as a hospital during the 1919 flu epidemic?
And then there’s the Brunswick Heads Memorial Hall which was built in the 1950s by local men and commemorates those who lost their lives in the two World Wars.
Or what about the Mullumbimby Civic Hall which was built in 1929 and has watched the community celebrate and share for almost 90 years?
Byron Shire Council manages 12 halls that are important and much-loved places for local people to get together for a wide range of reasons including dance lessons, dinners, dances, concerts and public meetings.
To encourage more people to use these wonderful community spaces Council has launched the Love Byron Halls project, a campaign to promote the halls in the Byron Shire.
The halls in the Byron Shire have served our communities for decades and Council is hoping this continues to be the case said Mark Arnold, Byron Shire Council’s Director Corporate and Community Services.
“The Love Byron Halls project is recognising the value of the halls as places for the community to gather and encourage more people to use them for meetings or functions,” Mr Arnold said.
“Many of our halls are managed by volunteer groups and, as part of the Love Byron Halls project, Council staff will be working with these groups to help build their management and marketing skills.
Council is now calling for Expressions of Interest from individuals or organisations who would like to run the Love Byron Halls project.
“This is a wonderful community project and Council is looking forward to watching people not only recognise the importance of the halls to local communities but to encourage the continued use of these amazing spaces,” Mr Arnold said.
