Exporting a yacht isn’t just “drive it out of the marina”.
From paperwork to departure: how we cleared a private yacht for export from Australia to PNG
Recently, our team handled the full export customs clearance for a privately owned yacht sailing from Cairns to Port Moresby. On the surface it looks simple: “just a boat leaving Australia”. In reality, it’s one of the most document‑intensive, detail‑critical exports we handle.
For this job, we:
- Coordinated the owner’s CCID and proof of ownership (Bill of Sale, previous Certificate of Operations)
- Prepared and lodged the Export Declaration (EDN) in ABF’s Integrated Cargo System (ICS) for a AUD 75,000 vessel
- Secured the Export Clearance Number (ECN) and ensured the owner had all documents on board
- Guided the owner through ABF’s outward clearance process: 96‑hour departure notice, crew passport details, equipment & stores list, and the on‑day inspection at the marina
- Provided clear instructions on what to carry to PNG Customs on arrival and how to liaise with their local broker
Every field in the EDN had to match the vessel registration, HIN, engine details, valuation and voyage plan. One typo and the whole clearance could be delayed—something you can’t afford when you’ve got a departure window, crew, and a new home port waiting in PNG.
The result? A smooth, compliant export clearance, with the owner sailing out on schedule and fully documented for arrival in Port Moresby.
If you’re planning to export a yacht or large vessel from Australia (or import one into PNG), the process is very doable—but it does need to be done right. Send us a message now!
