On a visit to Port Seafood, it was great to chat with John and to hear his plans to grow the business, and what a business it is. Supporting locally caught fresh seafood, Muddies to order, high end frozen products and their specialty, delicious platters. It’s great to see local heroes such as Port Seafood showcasing products renowned to our region, a must stop when visiting.

Dealing with a good ol’ fashion wet-season here in the far north presents a number of challenges for seafood producers and the likes. Fishers are dealing with difficulties when riverbanks burst from the shear volume of rainfall, and Coldstores are inundated with water in places it doesn’t belong.
To all those doing a great job in trying conditions this early part of time of year, hats off for continually turning the wheels and bringing us the local seafood we’ve all come to love

What a great day spent wandering down memory lane at the opening of the Babinda Museum, where an exhibit showcasing Supreme Fisheries featured (where it all started for our family business some 50 odd years ago). I felt lucky and privileged to be able to spend this moment with Eva and Greg Richardson (grandmother and uncle) and of course my 2 who had to get in on the act.
A big thanks to the Babinda Taskforce for getting this museum project off the ground.

This iconic seafood restaurant has it all, from the connection you get dining on the waterfront, to their mouth-watering menu. But the standout for me on our latest visit to Omeros, once again is the dine-in service. Their knowledge of the menu and its produce to their welcoming attitude, nothing short of first class! The culinary legacy within hospitality and its connection with our seafood industry is lead by passionate people. Cheers to you🥂

“I would like to extend our thanks for your support throughout the year and your ongoing your loyalty towards us. The support shown towards our local seafood producers never goes unnoticed.
It's now the time of year to put aside our time for family and friends, with a focus of staying safe over the festive season. On behalf of my family we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."

Seafood Directions Conference announces keynote speaker!
Conference organisers Seafood Industry CEO Veronica Papacosta.... “It is with great pleasure we announce Professor Ray Hilborn as a keynote speaker for the Seafood Directions Conference 2022, which will be held at the Sofitel Brisbane from September 13-15, under the theme ‘One Voice, One Future’,”

“Ray is a world-leading Professor at the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, University of Washington, specialising in natural resource management and conservation, who will present a talk titled, ‘How to sustain food from the seas while protecting marine ecosystems’.”

“I am excited to be able to travel again and reconnect with Australian colleagues at the Seafood Directions conference,” Professor Hilborn said.

“The [global] seafood industry faces unprecedented challenges in access to the ocean, but also some exciting opportunities and needs to be prepared to face these challenges in a unified way.

“The conference theme, ‘One Voice, One Future’, is spot on for where researchers and commercial seafood producers, both capture and aquaculture need to be as they move forward.

“Seafood is the best way to produce food while protecting natural ecosystems and this message needs to be made clear to national and international policy makers.”

Early-bird ticket sales are only available until Friday, June 24 and are at a discounted rate to standard tickets, so don’t miss out!

The Queensland Parliament’s Committee for State Development and Regional Industries public hearings on the Food (Labelling of Seafood) Bill 2021 was held in Cairns today. The purpose of the Bill, proposed by Mr Robbie Katter MP, Member for Traeger, is to raise consumer awareness around the origins of seafood being purchased and consumed, and to subsequently support the Australian and Queensland seafood industry and the local jobs it supports. I joined Jo-Anne Ruscoe - ABFA and Shawn McAtamney - ISP at the hearing. All in all it was a very positive day and a positive step towards empowering Queenslanders so that they can make informed decisions about what they eat.
