Cairns Employment Region Update – August 2026

There are plenty of opportunities across Cairns and Far North Queensland this month, with new jobs, training programs, career events, grants and workforce initiatives available across the region.

Highlights include the Construction Career Match, Cairns Maritime Jobs & Careers Expo, free and subsidised training opportunities, apprenticeship support, employment pathways and a wide range of upcoming community and industry events.

The August update also highlights continued demand for workers across key sectors including health care, construction and tourism, alongside new initiatives supporting apprentices, employers and job seekers.

Cairns Show Billboard Competition.

The Cairns Show Billboard Competition provides an exciting and prestigious opportunity for Visual Art and Digital Media students in Years 9–12 across Far North Queensland to showcase their original work on a large-scale public platform at the Cairns Showgrounds.

This initiative celebrates emerging artistic talent, promotes community recognition, and offers students authentic, real-world experience in large-format public art and design. Winning entries from each category will be professionally reproduced and displayed on a 12-metre billboard at the Scott Street entrance of the Cairns Showgrounds during the 2026 Cairns Show, providing high-visibility exposure to thousands of visitors.

Your creativity, dedication and artistic excellence have been recognised through this outstanding achievement, and you should all be incredibly proud.

The Business Liaison Association (BLA) and your respective schools are immensely proud of your accomplishments and the talent you have showcased. We also extend our congratulations to the teachers, families and supporters who have encouraged and inspired these young artists throughout their journey.

The 2026 Cairns Careers Expo was so much more than a one-day event—it was the result of months of planning, collaboration and the generosity of an amazing community.

To our students, thank you for your enthusiasm, curiosity and the respectful way you engaged with exhibitors throughout the day. You asked thoughtful questions, explored new career possibilities and represented your schools with pride.

To our teachers and schools, thank you for recognising the value of career exploration and for supporting your students to attend. Your commitment helps prepare young people for informed and confident career decisions.

To our 130 exhibitors, thank you for the incredible effort you put into your displays and interactive experiences. Your willingness to share your knowledge, career journeys and employment opportunities made a lasting impression on the approximately 4,500 students who attended.

With 130 exhibitors, approximately 4,500 students, and members of the public attending, the event was a fantastic showcase of opportunities, inspiration, and career exploration.

A special thank you to our 32 schools who attended, teachers, and students for your commitment, enthusiasm, and time in attending the Expo.

Your willingness to engage, ask questions, and explore future career pathways is what makes this event so valuable and successful.

We would also like to acknowledge the outstanding behaviour of the students throughout the event. Many exhibitors commented on how polite, respectful, and engaged students were when visiting their booths.
