NSW GUN BUYBACK
Hey Team HVTM & LAFOs! Mel here! This update isn’t one that we wanted but it’s one that we need to share.
We know there are going to be a lot of questions following the release of information about the NSW Gun Buyback, so we wanted to provide a quick update without overwhelming everyone with information.
At this stage, we only know what has been made publicly available on the NSW Government website.
To our knowledge, fi***rm dealers across NSW found out about these details at the same time as the general public. There was no prior consultation with affected dealers, nor were we given the professional courtesy of being advised how the process will work before the announcement was made.
So please be patient with your local dealer if they can’t answer all of your questions just yet – we are finding this out alongside you.
A few key points we do know:
• Phase 1 is expected to commence 2 November 2026.
• It will include eligible fi***rms affected by the new fi***rm limits, reclassification/prohibition changes and citizenship requirements.
• Fixed compensation amounts have been published for a number of fi***rm types.
• Phase 2 is expected in early 2027 for eligible higher-value fi***rms.
• Further details around eligibility, compensation and exactly how the process will operate are still to come.
The Government has also announced grants of up to $25,000 for eligible affected dealers and businesses.
While any assistance is acknowledged, $25,000 does not come close to making a dent in the loss of trade and ongoing financial impact our industry has experienced as a result of these changes.
For now, please don’t panic or make rushed decisions. There is still more information to come, and as we receive confirmed information we will continue to break it down and share it with you.
