A great opportunity to highlight how employment of veterans particularly within the Defence environment is a fantastic outcome.

1. It recognises the individual's value and provides them a job with purpose and meaning.
2. It recoups the investment in skills and knowledge already made by the ADF and keeps it within the Defence community.

The first batch of the 2022 Veteran Cyber Academy students are just starting to get their final industry certifications.

This pilot Academy has shown that we can take a diverse range of ADF veterans, some with no technical background at all, provide them real, industry-recognised training and certifications, soft skills, engagement with employers and result in real-world jobs.

Over the last 4 months, veterans have undertaken:

SEC275: Foundations - Computers, Technology, and Security
SEC401: Security Essentials: Network, Endpoint, and Cloud
SEC504: Hacker Tools, Techniques, Exploits, and Incident Handling

They have had their CV reviewed and improved, participated in soft skilling sessions on interview techniques, had briefings on the cyber industry's current state, and most importantly, attended careers fairs with opportunities to engage directly with employers.

While part-time, this Academy is intensive, rigorous and requires a lot of hard work.

Some students are already in employment as a result of just being students in the Academy. The Academy has shown that it can help stem the cyber skills shortage by enabling veterans to reskill and continue to serve the security of the nation in the cyber world.

With graduation on the 16th June at the Australian War Memorial, it will be a great final thanks to the student veterans on their amazing efforts in this Academy.

Allectum, in partnership with SANS, is proud to offer a fully-funded scholarship exclusively for Australian veterans. An intensive and immersive 16-week training program, the Academy aims to encourage and develop potential new cybersecurity professionals.

Veteran Cyber Academy:

The plan is simple, demonstrate that ADF veterans can be taken from virtually zero cyber background, given training, support and skills and over a period of four months of part-time work and become employable in the cyber security community.

At the one month mark, we asked for feedback from the participants as they passed their first exam of three exams.

Please read for yourself, real feedback from real veterans.

Feedback from real students, real veterans. 1 month into the academy.

Leading Seaman, Communication Information Systems, Royal Australian Navy, Australian Capital Territory

“the mentorship and industry workshops offer a unique experience by connecting students and mentors to ask questions and establish professional relationships in the field. (No other cyber training program offers this) "

"I am pinching myself to be part of this program, and once again, thank you."

Signalman, Electronic Warfare, Australian Army.

"The opportunity Allectum and SANS has given me and others to get world recognised cyber security qualifications for no cost except our time is absolutely invaluable."

"Along with the qualifications provided, the additional online seminars teaching life skills like: effective communication, resume writing and introducing us to potential employers is an excellent way to get our foot in the door."

"With the limited assistance provided when leaving the Defence Force, this pathway to effective employment is fantastic. I am forever grateful for this opportunity and would love to see others have the same after this Academy sessions is over."

Signalman, Information Systems Technician, Australian Army.

"As a veteran who currently contracts to Defence Science and Technology, the Veteran Cyber Academy has provided an amazing opportunity to look into the current Cyber Security practices and also provide further input to defend the critical research systems."

Leading Seaman, Electronics Technician - Communications, Royal Australian Navy, Australian Capital Territory

"I come from an electronics background and a have a little bit of IT knowledge. This course has been nothing short of incredible. It has shown me new things, it has corrected a lot of knowledge that I thought I had and has filled in a lot of gaps that I was and wasn't aware of. It answers the questions that you may be afraid of asking."

"I had been trying to land a job with a particular Defence-related Cyber Security consultancy company for around 12 months. I was put forward for 3-4 different roles to no avail. Another role popped up recently and this course helped get me over the line and I have just started in my new role. If it wasn't for the SANS Veteran Cyber Academy, I would not have been deemed suitable."

Sergeant, ADF Investigator Australian Army, Queensland

"As a medically discharging ADF member, trying to find an opportunity for a career change can be challenging and somewhat daunting. When I heard about the Sans/Allectum Australian Veteran Cyber Security Academy I knew I had to give it everything I had to get in. As I have never worked in IT before I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to succeed but wanted to give it every effort. Sans and Allectum have given me every bit of support I have asked for and more, which has led to great results to date."

"This course has improved my confidence which had been lacking due to my separating medical condition and has built me up to the point I believe I won't have any troubles getting a role in cybersecurity to fulfil my technology passion and enable me to support my family. I would encourage any veteran or discharging member to compete for entrance into this course. It not only will lead to employment but also employment in a growing field."

Signalman, Telecommunication Technician, Australian Army, New South Wales

"I have been in the IT field for years with solid networking and hardware background, but I have no solid cyber security foundation skills to back me up. Also, I have no programming background and hate it very much. The GFACT course is a great course to help build a solid foundation, understand the basics, and even more in programming. Even though this is the most challenging section for me, and I struggle with it, I learn a lot from it. Massive thank you for SANS Veteran Academy program providing me with the great chance to up skill and strengthen my foundation skills in cyber security (especially in programming."

Corporal, Electronic Warfare, Australian Army, Western Australia

"I am highly satisfied with the SANS Cyber Veteran Academy. It is a mutually beneficial program for both former veterans and the Australian cyber community. It helps upskill veterans in technical skills where we have a national shortage of skilled workers. The program utilises veterans strengths, making them more employable and helping to look after them post-discharge from service.

"I have done a variety of different types of training and I think that this program is one of the best that I have been involved in. The program is tailored to veterans including soft skilled sessions which helps them successfully transition. The training team is highly knowledgeable and creates the best environment for the likelihood of veterans successfully completing the program."

"The content is tailored to industry needs, highly relevant and not full of filler content. It helps to fast-track veterans to fill needed Cyber roles. This program should be run annually it helps support the veterans whilst creating a skilled workforce and filling a gap required on a national level. I highly recommend this program to all former veterans looking to build a career pathway and develop the technical skills required by industry."

Able Seaman, Electronic Technician, Royal Australian Navy

"I believe that the SANS Veterans' Cybersecurity Academy is a wonderful opportunity for Veterans to discover, learn, understand and gain experience in the many concepts and skills required to build and gain the confidence and the intimate knowledge required to pursue a career in Cybersecurity."

"The SANs program is meticulously well resourced, structured and very well organised. The program has been designed in such a way that it encourages curious learning and the program positively promotes and encourages an inquisitive interest to explore deeper concepts in Cybersecurity and security practices and principles that extend beyond the course materials."

Chief Petty Officer, Writer, Royal Australian Navy.

"The Cyber Security Academy has given me the opportunity to learn new skills in a growing industry with professional educators and mentors. Undertaking this training alongside other veterans and ADF spouses as classmates has provided me with a familiar supportive network as I learn and make the transition into my next career."

The First Australian Veteran Cyber Academy

On the 21st of February, 23 veterans and spouses began five months of intensive cyber training as part of Australia’s first Veteran Cyber Academy designed specifically for veterans and their spouses.

In 2021, Allectum and the SANS Institute partnered to create the first Australian Veteran Cyber Academy.

Over the past year, Allectum has worked pro bono with the SANS Institute to design a curriculum that blended cyber security, soft skill training and employment preparation to obtain the following objectives:

• Give veterans the opportunity to move into the cyber security industry
• Provide real education that is Defence and industry recognised worldwide
Allectum, as a veteran owned and operated company that works in the Defence and national security sectors, sees the tangible national security threats caused by workforce shortfalls every day.

In identifying these challenges, Allectum and the SANS Institute took proactive steps to do their part in resolving this issue rather than wait to be asked.

The Allectum team volunteered 100% of its time, money, and effort to support the veteran community in addition to contributing to the national security posture.

23 veterans or their spouses from around Australia are now taking the next big step of moving into the cyber security industry while providing a continuation of their service to the nation.

Congratulations to the 23 for being part of Australia’s cyber security capability.

“Put simply, the SANS Cyber Academy is the best mechanism out there to accelerate students’ development in this all-important profession. - James Lyne, SANS Instructor”
