Communication is a fundamental human need. In most things we do we need to communicate with others, in some way. In research and innovation communication skills are critical.

Some people with a strong focus on using their STEM skills undervalue connection and communication. This is perilous.

Many organisations we've been engaging with are in flux. They're undergoing structural, funding and priority changes. This understandably means far less attention on non-urgent projects. But investing in communication and marketing is always important because organisations that are quiet get forgotten. When you prioritise engagement with stakeholders, real change is possible, far faster.

Hi there, we might not have met 👋🏼 I'm Claire, the Founder of Innovate Communicate.

Why did I start this business? Because I've always been passionate about innovation and solving problems. And I see how my communication and marketing expertise can benefit my first career choice: science. I also wanted a business that allowed me to work with clients wherever they were (or we were)... as a Defence partner/family.

Why a business related to STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths)? I started my career in science and see how much value it can add to us all. But that doesn't mean I think science has all the answers (more on that another time 😉). Our world has a lot of problems AND opportunities to solve these problems. We need evidence-based information and accessible knowledge from people with their hearts in the right place, working together.

I see a lot of potential for STEM folks to better communicate their ideas, passion and the knowledge they've uncovered. To inspire, connect and move innovation forward. AND, most importantly really, to work with people outside of STEM to design their research and projects.

More about me...
👩🏼 If you're into personality typing, I'm pretty solidly an ENFP, the 'campaigner' (check out 16personalities.com for a fun activity).
🐈 I feel grateful every day for my family, including my husband (who's very different to me in soooo many ways, including in business) and daughter & our cats and guinea pigs.
🌳 Nature is my happy place & where I go to recharge my batteries and creativity.
🦉 I am naturally a night owl but I now love 6am fast-paced gym classes.

What can clients expect from me in Innovate Communicate? That I'll bring all my interest, enthusiasm & diverse experience to the table. I always try to genuinely understand the problem (and system/contexts) and deliver something that solves the problem or at least takes us a step further in the intended direction. I'm also incredibly curious about what makes people tick & what gets them excited.

So, tell me, are you into personality/strengths tests or are you a night owl or not?

Hat tip to for the pic.

Very interesting to watch this snippet from .

Students don't choose a course based on price. They choose it based on what'll set them up for life, what they're passionate about and what they're good at.

I'd challenge STEM organisations to think about how they're making working in STEM attractive (including leading with supportive, inclusive cultures) and sharing the positives, so young children and people can be attracted.

What do you think?
