LIVED EXPERIENCE LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Thanks to our advocacy this year, Su***de Prevention Australia is required to have a designated lived experience board member. They are now seeking expressions of interest to fill this position. If you have lived experience of su***de leadership skills, you might consider applying! See the link for more details.

Su***de Prevention Australia is seeking expressions of interest from associate members for the position of Independent Lived Experience Director on the Board. By reason of the retirement of Independent Director and Deputy Chair, Phillip Cornwell, there will be ONE Independent Director vacancy to be....

Our advocacy with Su***de Prevention Australia has reached a vote! Members voted in support of our proposal to embed lived experience on the board of directors but did not support our proposal to give associate members back the right to vote on director elections. Read our brief wrap up here:

Are you looking for professional development? The Mental Health Academy offers courses and presentations that have associated Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points/hours. Earlier in the year, our Founder Hayley Purdon presented on behalf of CriticLE at their Su***de Prevention Summit and the presentation is now available as part of their course offerings!

In this presentation, Hayley poses the question "if nearly two in five Australians have been close to someone who either died by su***de or attempted su***de, why do we struggle to find people with lived experience to embrace in our health workforces?".

You can find the presentation at the link.

In this course, Hayley Purdon explains how the prevailing mindset regarding su***de and the fear of stigma and discrimination stunts su***de outreach programs.

VOTE FOR to ALL CHANGES: We are contacting Su***de Prevention Australia members today urging them to vote at the upcoming Annual General Meeting. The special resolution that we have put forward, on behalf of our community and supporters, seeks to boost meaningful and appropriate leadership and decision making by people with lived experience of su***de.

This has been a long time coming, and stands on the shoulders of advocacy in 2019 from key members of the lived experience community. We are looking forward to the changes finally going to members for the 2023 AGM.

Our voting suggestions are in the images as we suggest members vote FOR for ALL changes and list the chairperson as their proxy where they cannot attend the meeting. If you want to chat about the vote, get in touch!

Today the Australian Bureau of Statistics released data on the Causes of Death in 2022. This release includes data on the number of deaths by su***de, associated risk factors and some important demographic breakdowns.

There is much, however, that the data don't show and we can engage with people with lived experience to help us fill in the gaps. As you engage with the data, take care of yourself and those around you and remember the real and human experiences behind the data.

You can read Hayley's reflections at our latest blog post:

Your views have been dismissed! Su***de Prevention Australia has sent a communique to members rejecting CriticLE's formal submission for special resolution of proposals to change their Constitution.

They have chosen to accept CriticLE's public consultation document as a valid submission instead but are yet to provide reasons as to why one proposal is valid and the other is not.

As your views are not considered through CriticLE's formal submission, we encourage you to raise your opinion on the amendment proposal to SPA directly by responding to their Explanatory Memorandum before 5pm tomorrow. This is their instructions:

"To assist Su***de Prevention Australia staff to be able to collate and circulate the points please:

• send points to admin@su***depreventionaust.org

• use the subject line “Supplementary points on proposed constitutional changes”

• attach the points as a Word document (PDFs cannot be accepted)

• put all content in the attached points (text in the email will not be included)

• submit by the due date of 5pm Wednesday 20th of September 2023"

If you cannot make a submission by this date, we encourage you to email it through regardless.

We are extremely disappointed in their response to the work CriticLE has done on capturing the views of yourself and others, especially when they have not attempted to do the same. We are still working hard to explore an appropriate resolution with them.

Today we formally submitted our motion to change key elements of Su***de Prevention Australia's Constitution. These will hold the organisation to account when it comes to meaningful inclusion of people with lived experience in governance and decision making.

The "we have an advisory" approach is no longer acceptable to any organisation who boasts inclusion of lived experience as the sector continues to enact the Su***de Prevention Advisors Final Advice and responds to calls from people with lived experience.

With the proposal, we also submitted an open letter, explaining our position on the changes and responding to claims put forward by Su***de Prevention Australia.

RECORDING UP! This short video explains our position relating to our current advocacy with Su***de Prevention Australia and changes we would like to see when it comes to making their inclusion of lived experience more than just lip service.

We are hoping that members agree to embed lived experience in SPA's governance structure and remove the restriction that was introduced in 2014 that stops associate members from having a say on who represents them on the board.

Su***de Prevention Australia (SPA) is the peak body representing su***de prevention organisations, people with lived experience and people who are passionate...
