National Road Safety Week (17 to 24 May) is a timely reminder that driving risk is rarely just about individual behaviour. It is often influenced by workplace factors: how jobs are scheduled, how travel is planned, what leaders reward, and what people feel they can say no to.

A simple awareness check for workplaces this week:
• Are staff expected to “make up time” if a meeting runs over?
• Are rest breaks assumed, or actually built into the diary?
• Do people feel comfortable rescheduling when they are fatigued or emotionally unsettled?
• Is there a clear expectation about phones, navigation, and calls while driving?
• After difficult client interactions, is there time to reset before getting back behind the wheel?

Road safety improves when expectations are explicit and supported by systems, not when it relies on good intentions alone.
